Baseball is so funny. Since last winter, the debate... has been about who the Yankees should give more playing time to between Anthony Volpe and Jose Caballero. Then it's June, and you have Cabby standing on first after getting hit by a pitch. Volpe barrels a triple that flies off his bat at 104.5 MPH. These debates are fun, and we should never stop having them, but baseball has always been the great equalizer. Guys usually find a way to play. Also, good for Volpe here. I will never forget the first time I walked... into St Peter's Basilica... None of it is painted. Everything overhead that appears to be a fresco is a mosaic: millions of small glass tiles, cut and set into place by hand. Michelangelo pierced the drum with sixteen windows, and beneath them runs a band of text, black on gold: TU ES PETRUS ET SUPER HANC PETRAM AEDIFICABO ECCLESIAM MEAM. "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church." From the floor it reads like an ordinary inscription but each of those letters is two metres tall... Above the windows the dome divides into sixteen segments, and within them six tiers of figures rise in rings: the popes buried in the basilica, then Christ, the Virgin Mary, St John the Baptist and the Apostles, then angels carrying the instruments of the Passion, then the faces of cherubim and seraphim. Above all of them, a blue sky scattered with gold stars, and at the summit, in the lantern, God the Father. The man who designed it, Giuseppe Cesari, was a painter. Between 1603 and 1612 he produced sixty-five life-size cartoons setting out the whole scheme, and every one of them was then translated into glass by mosaicists. The reason is actually pretty unglamorous. The basilica was damp, and candle smoke and incense from centuries of liturgy were eating the pictures alive. So the Vatican began converting the building into glass, dome by dome, and from the end of the 1600s the painted altarpieces too, one at a time. By the basilica's own reckoning, around ten thousand square metres of mosaic. I think I’m close to a burn out. For... the last few weeks it feels like I haven’t been able to think. Let alone do deep work. My brain just draws a blank. Super frustrating. Even thinking what tiles I should put into our new house feels like too much already. The first few weeks I tried to force myself to work anyway. Obviously made it even worse. So, this week I decided I’m just going to take a break. Go on hikes, drive my bike, read books and play video games. I had this before and eventually it would go away. Made me realise though that I should put guards into place for the next time. Building a team is part of this. Focus on what I like to do and get help with all other tasks. This is a question I think quite a lot... of people are wondering about. Right now, I’m hiring students to handle the newer phones, post content, and create content every day. For the TikTok accounts that are already trusted, have been running for a long time, and have a high follower count, I automate them using my own internal tools. Currently, I only handle the first steps myself: buying new phones → warming them up → making the first posts. After that, I hand the phones over to the students I hire to continue creating and posting content. Then, once I feel the accounts are strong enough, I move them into automation. And right now, I’m traveling with my family in Da Nang. This time I’m here with my family and want to spend all my time with them, so I won’t be meeting anyone while I’m here. 🏝️ I always aim to build everything in an automated way, or avoid doing things I don’t enjoy by hiring people to handle them for me.😌show more

GPT-5.5 is MUCH more reliable on longer running tasks... - for the first time with any model. As we speak I have a migration running for over 7+ hours - this literally never happened before, the models would maybe run for 30 mins or of you really shout at them for 2-3 hours. Last night I went to sleep, set a long running task, then queued up 10 prompts to 'keep it going'. It did not stop after the first prompt and kept going for 8+ hours and I woke up to all the same prompts still queued up. The ability to run for a long time, in combination with ability to validate with computer use & other tools, makes it much more useful for building real applications.show more

Looking through old projects... Some time ago, I was... working on a project that was 1st person. Typical issue: weapons penetrating into walls when close. In a deferred pipeline, everything is rendered from one camera, so classic multiple camera and multi FOV tricks are problematic. Clever line trace and IK systems to animate arms and weapons out of the way were off the table. I am sure that I am by far not the first to think of this, but my solution was to flatten the character along the camera's forward vector in a shader.
