Starting with iOS 27, we can actually convert a... tab bar to a sidebar. A new modifier was introduced to do this. “.defaultTabBarPlacement(.sidebar)” As of current testing, this seems to work on iPhones as well when the app is in landscape mode. This is the same behavior used in the iPhone Health app, where the tab bar converts into a sidebar in landscape mode!show more

There isn’t a single line of SwiftUI here, this... is a pure UIKit implementation on iOS 18. A fully custom navigation bar that hooks into the nearest UIScrollView to show the scroll-edge effect only once the user starts scrolling. Buttons are fully custom and display a nice brightness effect (CAFilter) when touched.show more

LinkedIn wrapped is here! And it's made with Rive... Stoked to be invited by BUCK to join the project. I wasn’t actually animating the thing though I had more of a technical assignment and we had quite a few things to solve. There is 9 chapters total (but not everyone sees all the chapters or even all the slides in given chapter) in 3 languages, the data being sent to Rive is raw so we had to cover for many variables: - A progress bar aware what chapters are included for given user - A progress bar checking what slides are included for and logging their duration time to progress bar - A custom slider solution (the default Rive slider is not enough if you turn contents on and off) - A State Machine logic aware of chapters or slides skipped from playback - A custom slider behavior for when there is auto-slide (instant) and tap-slide (slide animation) - A custom text-length tracker for to dynamically change font-size for long strings - A custom screen ratio tracker to scale down the UI for small screens - Handling dynamically handle big numbers (10,000 becomes 10k etc.) - Handling translations (3 languages) - Super complex behaviour for when if some data-point is missing we don’t leave a blank space, but it is being replaced with other data point instead (so some user se A-B-C, but some will see only B-C as if A never existed without leaving blank space) - Rage click prevention Amazing experience, thanks for having me. a well-known iOS Safari quirk is that inputs with... a font-size <16px trigger an auto-zoom on focus using 16px is probably the best solution, but it can feel a bit heavy in tight UIs a clever workaround is to keep the font-size at 16px and scale the input down with CSS!show more

When we wrap content in a ScrollView to support... larger text on iOS, it adds bounce behavior even when the content fits with default settings. To avoid it, and still allow scrolling when needed, we can apply .scrollBounceBehavior(.basedOnSize), introduced in SwiftUI in iOS 16.4.show more

Started using React Native two days ago and immediately... fell down a tab-bar rabbit hole. I’d seen Instagram and Revolut collapse their tab bars on scroll while keeping every icon visible. I wanted that without giving up real iOS Liquid Glass. Turns out iOS 26’s public API can’t express that state. UITabBarMinimizeBehavior is an enum of when, not what. With onScrollDown, UIKit minimizes the bar to the active tab alone. There’s no parameter controlling what survives. So most implementations rebuild the visible bar as a custom component. Some use genuine glass materials, but the real UITabBar is gone and with it, the native selection capsule: that little blob that moves like a drop of water between tabs. You can reproduce it with separate springs on the leading and trailing edges. I didn’t want a reproduction. I wanted UIKit’s. Then I remembered a Flutter app i built some months back which uses cupertino_native. Flutter runs the app while a platform-view bridge renders a real UIKit UITabBar. Finding expo-glass-tabs clarified the compact geometry I wanted. The two ideas clicked: why not bridge a real UITabBar into React Native? Here’s the trick: a standalone UITabBar has no UITabBarController managing it, so Apple’s minimization rule never applies. That means I can control its frame and items myself. Expo Router still owns navigation and screen lifecycle. React Native detects scroll direction. Swift removes and restores the real item labels, recentres the icons and animates the native bar’s size. All five icons remain visible. The result keeps Apple’s Liquid Glass, water-drop capsule, hit testing and accessibility, while adding a compact state its public API doesn’t provide. One gotcha tho: detaching the bar means reimplementing everything the controller previously gave you for free. Active-tab reselect scrolling was one exampleshow more
