The 525i has the M54 2.5L naturally aspirated straight-six, 192 HP, and a five-speed manual gearbox. That is exactly why it is worth talking about. The E39 chassis is widely considered the best driving 5 Series BMW ever made - precise steering, near-perfect weight distribution, and a rear-wheel drive setup that communicates everything the road is doing. The VR6 engine was born out of a packaging... problem. VW's engineers needed a six-cylinder that could fit transversely in a front-wheel drive Golf engine bay. Something a conventional V6 with cylinder banks spread 90 degrees could never do. The solution was a narrow-angle 15-degree configuration with a single cylinder head shared across all six cylinders, making it barely wider than a four cylinder. The MK3 Golf VR6 was the first car to receive it in the Golf family 2.8L, 174 HP, 235 Nm, 0-100 km/h in around 7 seconds, and a sound unlike anything else in a hatchback body. Not the fastest car of its era. The most characterful one in its class without question. That engine went on to power the Corrado, the Passat, and eventually the Phaeton and even some Porsche models. I drove Tesla for the first time; I felt... happy like a child for the first 10 minutes, and was totally disappointed the rest of the ride The autopilot feature is not available in the EU, but even the lane-control works extremely badly Tesla didn't recognize road works and almost crushed me into a barrier Then it went completely crazy on a temporary orange lane and started wiggling around The assistant consistently missed lanes and ignored speed limit signs, so I had to disable the assistant and drive manually I drove an electric BMW i4 before, and it had a much better cruise control and assistant (it boggles my mind that BMW kicked Tesla's ass in software) With BMW, I never had to touch the gas pedal and drove the car just using cruise control and speed limit assistant You could also set a speed limit, and even if you pressed full gas, it never crossed, which was handy in a city Tesla is still an insane product, the interior and exterior design are amazing, but it feels like an app with an amazing frontend and a very poor backend (at least in the EU) Driving gave me a lot of motivation to make more $$$, and I will still probably get a Tesla, and not a BMW bz BMW is a car for boomersshow more

The Mercedes-AMG W205 C63 launched in 2015, which means... this car is now ten years old. That is difficult to reconcile because it still feels current in a way few cars manage to do. The 4.0-litre biturbo V8 and with 500 Hp in the ultimate version and relatively compact dimensions defined what a modern performance saloon was supposed to feel like before electrification and downsizing shifted priorities. At the time, the W205 felt like a technical upgrade over its predecessor. Today, it feels like the closing chapter of something more mechanical. The fact that it still holds attention is not about speed or numbers, but about how complete the package was. The E46 M3 GTR exists because BMW Motorsport needed... an engine that did not exist. The P60B40 V8 was developed specifically to homologate the car for racing, and it never appeared in any other BMW road model. It was compact, lightweight and built for sustained high-rpm use rather than everyday refinement. This engine was not a variant of something else. It was a purpose-built solution to a single problem, to BEAT PORSCHE. That is why it disappeared once the problem disappeared. The GTR did not create a new direction for BMW. BMW M5, E28. The first M5. Hand-assembled by BMW... Motorsport in Garching, not built like a normal 5 Series. Powered by a 3.5L straight-six derived from the BMW M1’s engine. 282 hp and 5-speed manual only. At the time, it was faster than many sports cars like Ferrari 328. And it didn’t even look the part with subtle M badges on the exterior. From the outside, it could pass as a normal 5 Series. In 2021, I discovered and recreated a mind-blowing physical... privacy project: a custom baseball cap fitted with infrared diodes that can hide you from surveillance cameras (hello, Flock!). It was an incredible experience, but unfortunately there weren’t enough buyers. I just stumbled across an old video from that time… The most fascinating (and slightly unsettling) part of this tech is that, in theory, you could make a facial-recognition camera see a completely different person instead of you. It doesn’t sound good. It sounds unreal. The E60... M5’s V10 was a Formula 1 engine. Nothing sounds like it, not before or after. The E60 M5’s S85B50 V10 was born from BMW’s F1 research, ten throttle bodies, 8,250 rpm redline and a flat-plane–like firing order that gave it that razor-edged howl. Every gear change from the SMG-III gearbox adds a bark of mechanical aggression, making the car feel alive even at idle. The titanium valves, semi-dry sump, and ultra-short stroke allowed it to rev like a race engine. No turbos, no filters, just raw combustion turned into music. I asked our sound designer Gurwal to make this... moment feel like as if a sound recorder on the set would actually be swept away by the flood. As if they wouldn’t be able hold on to the microphone and get the right levels making the sound just barely usable. I wanted it to feel rough, raw and dirty. Initially I thought that this would be loud, but Gurwal suggested instead that the sound should almost dissapear, which I think made the scene way more impactful. I learned a lot by working with Gurwal. Like in this case that less can be more.show more
