Surprisingly, Windows 10's explorer.exe still works in Windows 11... Version 26H1, albeit bit buggy (e.g., non-working Task View). When ran (11's explorer isn't running), it'll use the taskbar from Windows 10, more features than Windows 11's taskbar such as resizing and moving it.show more

It's happening! Here's your first look at a movable... taskbar in Windows 11, coming soon. You'll be able to move and resize the taskbar on Windows 11, just like you did on Windows 10! It's still in internal testing, and to be clear, this video is from a virtual machine, which is why it might feel slow. Also, Microsoft won't use the right-click menu we're seeing in the video; it's only being used to quickly debug the feature. What else do you want Microsoft to improve in Windows 11? 👇show more

Microsoft teases a faster and configurable context menu (right-click... menu) for Windows 11 after years of complaints! Marcus Ash, who leads Design and Research for Windows and Devices, says Microsoft is working on making context menus faster, simpler by default, and configurable to what you use most. That last part is huge. Windows 11’s context menu was supposed to fix the cluttered Windows 10 right-click menu. Instead, it became slower, padded, inconsistent, and still messy. You often need “Show more options” just to reach the old menu, which defeats the whole point of redesigning it. Now Microsoft is taking the same approach it used with Start and taskbar: give users control. Resizable Start. Movable taskbar. Smaller taskbar. Customizable Start sections. And now, configurable context menus. This is the Windows 11 reset users wanted 🥳show more

Windows 11 is getting "accelerated app launches," and I... tested it on a PC with just 4GB RAM. Surprisingly, Microsoft Edge now opens much faster when other apps are already running, and Microsoft says this feature will eventually be available to other Windows apps, too! Previously, when Edge was already running in the background and you opened it from the taskbar, Start menu, or a link, Windows would create an extra, temporary process just to tell the existing Edge instance to open. The process would then exit. With the new accelerated launch feature, Windows skips that unnecessary process and sends the request directly to the running instance of Edge. I tested it before and after installing KB5127936 on a Windows 11 virtual machine with a paltry 4GB RAM. Before the update, Edge opened fairly quickly when the PC wasn't doing much, but there was a noticeable delay when Store and Paint were open. After the update, Edge opened surprisingly faster under the same conditions. To be clear, this only improves warm launches, where the app is already running in the background. Opening Edge for the first time after a restart won't benefit from this feature. This feature will also come to other apps, as Windows 11 keeps getting better!show more

📲 In the Android 17 QPR1 Beta, the taskbar... now shows your most recently opened apps at the end (up to 2 on foldables) instead of "predicted" apps. This should make multitasking faster and more consistent, in my opinion. But what do y'all think of this change? 🤔show more

A guy in Vancouver built an entire operating system... inside a Chrome tab. By himself. Over six years. His personal website is the OS. You open and a Windows-style desktop loads. File explorer. Start menu. Taskbar. You can drag in a zip and extract it. You can play DOOM. You can play Quake III Arena. You can boot Linux from an ISO. You can run Stable Diffusion locally for image generation. You can open a Python terminal. You can edit code in Monaco, the same engine that powers VS Code. All of it runs in your browser tab. Nothing installs. His name is Dustin Brett. Self-taught engineer. Father. Husband. 4,473 commits. All his. He had to swap the Windows icon for the π symbol because of legal pressure. The repo has 12,883 stars. MIT license. His hosting bill is one dollar a month.
