Cal Randall was the most fun pitcher I watched... all year, consistently attacking lineups with nothing but a 96-99 mph heater from about the most optimal mechanics, and thus release characteristics, as anyone on the planet. A great pick by the Cardinals (round 5, pick 146). Despite struggling with command (14.7% BB), particularly with his infrequently used slider and changeup, Randall's worst-case outcome is a mid-leverage reliever. The fastball would immediately become top-10 in MLB (96.7 mph, 18/10, 5.2 ft release, 7+ ft extension), and any semblance of a slider above ~25% usage should keep hitters guessing enough to get Major League outs. A damn high floor for a fifth-round pick. The relief risk is as high as it gets, but with the improvements in pitching development in St. Louis, I wouldn't count anything out. Without much history at all in pitch design or biomechanical work, Randall may be able to unlock a more consistent feel for strikes or a better breaking ball. From his profile, I'd start by trying to find a true gyro. Current slider is 87 mph (7/-2). Changeup exactly mirrors fastball at 89 mph. Why not shoot for such upside in the fifth round?show more

People wanna know why I love the SHREDmill so... much?? This collection of videos is exactly the reason why I’m such a big advocate, as both a speed AND coaching/technical AMPLIFER⚡️🔌 All of these reps were done within the same session: Rep 1: 8.3 mph; excessive turnover, minimal horizontal push/thigh split Rep 2: after working on some positional wall drills, hit 7.7 mph; better positions/thigh split, but no push Rep 3: 9.3 mph; literally put it all together as far as the “good” from reps 1 and 2! Sprinting on the ground, incorporating max effort jumps/plyos, and still getting strong in the weight room are musts for maximizing speed development, but no other tool in the speed world allows you to both improve the qualities needed to be a damn good accelerator, while also giving you the feedback (both objectively via outputs, and the visual/auditory feedback from watching+coaching reps) needed to make improvements in short periods of time. With the MLB draft coming up in 21 days,... it's time to start prepping some of these guys to transition into pro ball! I fully expect to hear Ariston Veasey's name called EARLY this year. It's easy to see why: ✅ Sits 95 mph ✅ Tops 98 mph ✅ 20" IVB fastball (cut-ride 👀) ✅ Nasty slider ✅ ~60% whiff rate ✅ 32% K rate ✅ .138 BAA ✅ Absolute DOG on the mound The crazy part? Ariston is new to pitching! Not kidding. He had 10 innings in his entire life before I started coaching him last year. He's an elite athlete who is easy to coach because he can actually make adjustments if cued the right way. He dominated hitters this year with only 2 pitches. They're both elite and will play in pro ball. However, the untapped potential here is the best part. ⚾️ Why shouldn’t we use feet to measure intensity?... Have you seen somebody throw 90 MPH from 90’? Have you seen somebody throw 65 MPH from 90’? Yes and Yes! Ok, Bad metric for our goals ⚾️ Why shouldn’t we use Perceived % intensity? We have all seen Little Johnny throw his 50% bullpen at 80 MPH. No, he does not Sit 160 MPH in games last we checked. Too subjective of a metric With all the technology and advancements in the game, there is no way we should be measuring build up throwing intensities with “Feet Thrown” or a “Subjective %” We need to be able to quantify the single most important component of a Rehab or Build Up throwing Progression: INTENSITY HERES WHY: ⚾️ For any throwing progression, the goal is to introduce a slightly higher stress to the arm, then let their body adapt to the new stress, making it their new baseline. Then, make another small increase in the stresses and repeating this process until they have returned to their normal Freqs, Intensities, and Volumes ⚾️ Too big of a Spike which could occur from both errors in being too aggressive or too conservative then having to ramp up to return to a game can be a cause a failed Return to Play Here’s a simple fix: Use A Radar Gun ✅ Instant Feedback for Athletes to stay in a Goal Velo Range ✅ Very digestible metric for Athletes to comprehend and understand ✅ Avoids the flaws at both ends of either overstressing or understressing the armshow more

I don't know the answer, but when was the... last time twin brothers competed for spots on the USA Baseball CNT roster? Pretty fun to watch. Both from Oklahoma Baseball Malachi (left) and Kyson (right). Kyson up to 98 tonight with an above average 87-88 slider in one clean inning of work. After the Striker spends 100 MPH videos blew up... not too long ago, you couldn’t find a video without seeing comments of his mechanics needing improvement and just kind of absurd reasons as to why his mechanics need to improve. Keep in mind this is a 16 year old kid throwing 100 MPH. Can he really throw 100 MPH with as many of the mechanical flaws as the Instagram comments make him out to have? Or are mechanics subjective and majority of what people think creates elite throwers just not really matter like they think it does? With that being said here are couple subjective thoughts that I have on this throw: Passive lower half, doesn’t push/jump to try to create velocity. Setting up torso in a great spot at foot plant, not forcing it True rotation, pelvis rotates torso follows, minimal counter rotation You can agree or disagree with what my thoughts are, which makes the point of speaking the same language between coaches and athletes constantly so important. This figure from HIL-SERL is one of the clearest... visualisations of how RL learns differently from imitation learning. The difference comes down to this: imitation learning treats each (state, action) pair as independent. A correction at timestep 20 teaches nothing about timestep 19 or 21. RL propagates reward backward through time. One successful insertion updates the value estimate of every state along the trajectory. So RL builds a full map of "which states lead to success"; imitation learning just memorizes individual snapshots. Setup: a robot inserting a RAM stick into a motherboard slot. Each dot is an end-effector position (Y = lateral, Z = height). Starting position is randomized. Left to right = training progressing. Top row (RL): the policy builds a funnel. Broad at the top, narrowing into the target. It systematically fills in the state space, learning which paths lead to success from many different starting positions. Bottom row (imitation learning / HG-DAgger, same human data): sparse, diffuse, no funnel. The policy only learns near states the human demonstrated. The A's continue to stack up on young left-handed... pitching, selecting Mason Edwards (2nd round, pick 47). Edwards wields a 91-94 mph four-seam averaging ~21 iVB, although the pitch plays below its raw carry from a very high 6.6 ft. release height. Likely needs to be 93-95 for big league success, swing-and-miss somewhat lacked. The secondaries and their potential make Edwards the prospect he is. From the over-the-top release, his 80 mph curveball generates strong two-plane movement (-10/11) at a very steep approach. Strong command of the offering, ability to use at high frequency. While he didn't use it too often, Edwards' changeup has massive promise, also on a very steep plane from his heavily vertical release. Showed velocity and movement separation from his four-seam, projects as a great weapon vs. RHH. Boasted an elite whiff rate >50%. Needs more consistent feel and usage. The southpaw's slider is also a work in progress and was non-existent in many outings this year, but it will be a critical bridge pitch in his arsenal. 80-82 mph with inconsistent shape. With such a large vertical distinction between his four-seam and curveball, Edwards needs a hard, tight slider to sit between the pair and make swing decisions tougher. Hopefully, the A's can find a mid-80s pitch in gyro territory. The largest area for growth with Edwards is his command, as he posted a walk rate >10% in each of his three collegiate seasons (11.9% junior year). In my opinion, it seemed like he was always pitching for punchouts and around the edges of the plate. I think more strikes should come with more in-zone emphasis in early counts, and he has the stuff to never worry about being over the plate. With some velocity progression and refinement of his changeup and slider, I find it very likely Mason Edwards becomes at least of middle of the rotation starting pitcher. A's have a stellar crop of young southpaws.show more

At the point I don't even care anymore. FSD... is too safe to not allow the user to allow 1 mph rolling stops. I obviously know the law - but the user/supervisor/person responsible for vehicle should be able to allow via an toggle-able OPTION. We can select Mad Max and go 85 in a 55 but cannot select rolling stops to blend in - which saves almost 3 seconds to go from 10mph to "stop" to 10mph??? This is actually probably a piece of increasing take rate. It's too brutal right now to use FSD around others daily. 99.5% of drivers roll stop signs per Tesla. (Not: I accelerated manually in top video in FSD when I "felt" I was not moving) Tesla AIshow more

Jay Allmer (21yo) deserves an opportunity with an affiliate... team. Over the course of the offseason Jay has worked hard w/ both coach @praisepitching & Mason Feole to turn himself into one of, if not the most intriguing non-drafted college players & current FAs from last year. He performed highly in the MLB Draft League serving up 21 IP, 2.14 ERA 17K-5 BBs including 8 SVs & 3Ws, yet he operated last summer averaging just 90.8. Now... he has averaged roughly 94 in his bullpens. Up significantly from his in game averages, & prior bullpen PR of 92. Which has also featured Jay routinely running both fastball shapes (FS/SK) up to 95. The jump into averaging 94 has been a relatively recent one. After the new year Jay worked on cleaning up his posture & positioning of the torso during his drop in order to avoid over counter-rotating which was forcing him to pull heavily east-west & direct less energy towards the plate. He significantly improved his take away to leverage more of a linear path & a slightly higher lead arm in order to maintain his stack trunk positioning without tilting back into lumbar/lower back extension during his leg lift into drop phase. With an elite 3 pitch mix, including an 84 mph sweeper, someone needs to get this guy signed.show more
