Possession (1981), directed by Andrzej Żuławski, is one of... the most emotionally and psychologically intense films ever made. At its center is Isabelle Adjani, whose fearless performance as Anna remains one of cinema’s most haunting. Her descent into madness, grief, and hysteria feels terrifyingly real, especially in the subway scene, where she completely loses control in a frenzy of emotion and physical collapse. Adjani later revealed that the role left her deeply drained and took years to recover from. Her performance was so disturbing and authentic that rumors spread claiming she had attempted s*icide after filming. Those stories reflect just how believable and consuming her portrayal was. Possession blurs the line between psychological breakdown and supernatural horrorshow more

It was rumored that Isabelle Adjani attempted s**cide following... the film’s release due to the extreme emotional and psychic demands of her performance. Possession (1981) was heavily censored for its US release, and banned in the UK. Sam Neill has commented on the rigors of filming: “I call it the most extreme film I’ve ever made, in every possible respect, and he asked of us things I wouldn’t and couldn’t go to now. And I think I only just escaped that film with my sanity barely intact”.show more
