Today I’m solving a classic distributed systems problem: how... to reliably stream logs from multiple replicas in chronological order? Surprisingly, none of the mainstream container tools do this. docker service logs, kubectl logs, stern, kubetail, k9s - they all just interleave streams as they arrive. The standard workaround is to pipe through | sort 🙃 To do it properly, you can't immediately print a log entry because a slower stream might have an earlier timestamp that hasn't arrived yet. You need to know when it's "safe" to print. Here's how I'm solving this for the new 'uc logs' command. You need two things: 1. Low watermark Track the minimum timestamp across all log streams and safely print buffered logs with timestamps below this watermark. > watermark = min(latest_timestamp for each stream) > sort and print all buffered logs where timestamp < watermark 2. Heartbeat timestamps What if a container becomes quiet? The entire stream gets stuck because the watermark wouldn’t advance. The solution is to periodically send empty heartbeat entries with the current timestamp from the servers. This is a promise: "I have no logs older than this" This lets the client advance the watermark immediately instead of blocking the output. 500ms–1s interval works well in practice. What about unsynchronised clocks? Not much you can do without making things messy. Just detect it, warn the user, and call it a day.show more

Did you notice that there is no "Work in... Progress" watermark in the latest Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced gameplay videos? There could be a chance that this is the final build of the game, or very close to it. So the GOLD announcement could be just around the corner. They mentioned it in the article, but it should have been written on the videos as well, like in all the previous Resynced videos. This is the first time there has been no watermark.show more

My 2nd log cabin build was invested with snakes.... Not just any snakes. The most venomous snake in America, the Coral Snake. My 1st log cabin, American Chestnut, whooped me. It made me rediscover my faith. This Cypress cabin in FL was over 1000 miles away from my Chestnut cabin in PA with a totally different scope. I met the contractors one day & they told me they were going to just buck up and burn the logs. I told them I’d just take them off their hands so I can rebuild the cabin on my riverfront land in FL - they happily obliged. I took the easy route on this one and plucked the logs one by one with a tele-handler. I hauled the 50’ logs to our property and built an outdoor shower. These red cypress logs will be the base of our FL Cracker Cabin build. After almost a dozen builds, we are finally building our family a house that isn’t a rental on our dream property.show more

Google has just done a VERY W thing while... Anthropic is acting L :( Gemini users now have an option to remove the visible watermarks from AI-generated images, videos, and songs etc Now you can disable it. While the invisible SynthID watermark is still there. Now as a creator, you can actually Generate media without the need for the ugly watermark And now the irony… Anthropic has just released the news about embedding imperceptible watermarks into the AI-generated texts in the new Claude models. Google: “Let creators remove the visible mark.” Anthropic: “Let’s add the watermark to the text.” Interesting times👀show more

Today we shipped sling, an agent-first CLI for your... GitHub Actions 💫 Right now, if you ask your agent why a CI job failed, it goes and pulls the entire set of GHA logs and eats up your context window. 🪵 > sling why StarSling (YC X25) computes the run's logs and metadata, along with the evidence lines it matched to tell you why a run failed If you want to know what your GHA usage is, you have to go to the GH UI and click around to find it. 💸 > sling bill tells you how many minutes, how much you're spending, and across which runner labels Trying to understand what your slowest job is? You'll need to hunt around the GHA UI and even then you only get an average. 📊 > sling top and sling usage tell you runner minutes and cost across all workflows and repos, with p50, p95, p99, queue wait and a week over week trendshow more

At Uber, our testing agent hit an outage in... Australia that I still think about. We had the recording. That's about it. No network trace for the run. No logs mapped to each step. No perf data. Just a video of an agent pressing a button and a team trying to reconstruct what happened underneath. We eventually traced it to a transient issue. But "eventually" is the problem. If the run had shipped with real instrumentation, the why would have taken one look, not an investigation. So when we built Revyl, that was non-negotiable. Every run comes with: > network waterfall, every request and response > device logs timestamped against each step > CPU, memory, and FPS traces for the full run The agent finds the problem. The report explains it.show more

Universities and High Schools have not moved rapidly enough... to guide students to have skills for the next decade. THEY HAVE FAILED. It is a massive crisis that can be averted by understanding what AI and Robotics will bring about. Solutions are knowing how to use these tools and new industries that will rise. But this situation is also on ALL OF US. No “job” is safe from founder to entry level in most industries. You and I, by what we do, will be “replaced” ultimately. What to do? AI and Robotics are tools, the next decade is owned by those who know how to use them expertly, but this is also temporary. We have to understand that what we do for “work” will change giving ultimately a greater value to those that are: Creative Flexible Always learning Willing to be wrong Love being human Love being alive Know history Covet wisdom Knowing all tech has downsides Building strong family and friends Realize many institutions have failed The first four are required for you to be able to live through this period with your sanity intact. The rest will allow you to thrive. There are no true careers at this point anymore. There are advocation and vocations which will either earn you money or give life meaning. We will learn that we are not “what we do”, just like we knew for 99% of human existence. Let that sink in. — You and I are far, far ahead of knowing this and we can do two things: 1) Laugh at the “clueless” 2) Help people understand with grace Go to Reddit if you are 1, in fact don’t follow me because you will not like this next decade and what I post. You are 2 and thank you. Even if you and I have not solved this issue, we can help people understand what is ahead and with determination and creativity bound together to solve it locally. Or human family has done this millions of times. The evidence is: you are here. The Neo Luddite movement has not even begun and it will potentially rip apart society even more than all the fashionable moment in the recent past has. These Luddites will have a good point with the wrong answers cooked up by dying academics that cling to labels, “virtues” and victim hood. It will be readymade for some governments to enter in as “big daddy” to “help us”. You will not like what they do, but you will only know when it is too late. It will include YOU “volunteering” to “leave” by 60, to “help out” CanadaPod style. “Brian, I’m 24 what do I do?”. I hope to do much more here to help. But I do know this: 1) Learn a trade or vocation because it’s valuable. It may also be free to low cost if you do it right. 2) Learn everything you can about USING AI and TRAINING YOUR AI. Your expertise will be in the top 1% for a decade. But not forever. 3) Understand Bitcoin and how it will rise while other things sink. This is a short list for now. We will know more moving forward. When you see videos like this posted below, know one thing: Many of these folks had no real family of mental and physical support. Maybe no parent or one parent. Maybe only a broke system to prepare them for—nothing. This was not their doing. Now it is not your “job” to help them, it is your survival to help them if that is what you need. See some day after the dust settles these 20 year olds will be 40 year olds and running YOUR world. And at some point you may need them more than you think you do. You will need them, as they need you now. THIS IS WHAT PAST WISDOM KNEW. The elders of the past never found the need to piss on the youth and hope for the best. THE YOUTH ARE OUR BEST, let us all find ways to change it, even if every aspect of “the system” wants us to berate them into the ground.show more

Iranian streets are filling up for the 4th day... as freedom-loving people around the world celebrate a New Year. I’m asking you to take a few minutes today and pray for the people of Iran. If you see footage of them in the streets, do your best to confirm it and share it. People have a hard time believing things without seeing evidence. The current regime will do everything it can to prevent brave voices from being seen and heard. This is why it’s crucial for those of you who are willing — to share what you can, whenever you can.show more
