Just two months ago, we were on the verge... of letting go of a customer that we had been serving for more than two years. The prices were super competitive as they were procuring these springs from China. According to our cost calculations, we would have to sell them these springs at our breakeven price point. We would not be making any profit from their orders. The volumes were huge and we decided to take up the challenge. In manufacturing, one of the very important metric that your product cost depends on is cycle time. The speed at which we are able to process that part within the desired tolerance. Higher the speed at which you can manufacture, lower the cost of making that component. We could only manage 150 pcs/minute on our imported machines. At this speed, it was unviable for us. It would only make sense for us to continue if we were somehow able to manufacture this spring at a minimum of 200 pcs/minute. We were far apart and it seemed we wouldn’t be able to reach that goal. We were on the verge of giving up after two years of persistent effort in increasing our speed. Today, we manufactured that same spring on the CNC machines that we built in-house at a whopping 220 pcs/minute! We went from almost letting go off that customer to now asking that very same customer to increase our order volumes! First video is our imported machine at 150 pcs/minute. Ten years... ago today, Sergey and I finished training some of the first end-to-end neutral nets for robot control 🤖 We submitted the paper to RSS on January 23, 2015. It was rejected for being "incremental" and "unlikely to have much impact" Our resubmission to NeurIPS was also rejected It now has >4,000 citations (and more importantly, end-to-end training is widely accepted!) It's also cool to think about what's changed and what's the same -- - The network was 92k parameters and trained on ~15 minutes of data - The code was a combination of matlab, caffe, ROS, a custom CUDA kernel for speed, and a low-level 20 Hz controller in C++, all talking to each other. ROS+matlab was as bad as it sounds. - We pre-trained the encoder and did inference off-board on a workstation with a larger GPU. - We were paranoid about varying lighting messing up the network, so we did all the experiments after sunset (so long nights running experiments on the robot past 3 am) Now, we have manipulation policies that are far more dextrous, far more generalizable, and maybe on the cusp of breaking into the real world. :) (the paper:show more

Might be time to give up on Bobcat Company... . When our machine was in the shop, we had them replace the drive belt. First job out today, the drive belt fails. Machine’s now stranded on the customer’s property and completely immobile. We called it in and were told the earliest a tech could come out is next Tuesday. That’s a full week of a machine just sitting, dead in the water. Totally unacceptable and not a good sign of reliability. They charged us for a new belt and pulley, which we’ll now be installing ourselves tomorrow. And they tried to spin it like maybe we did something wrong. We didn’t. At the exact same time, our other machine starts spewing hydraulic fluid from the arm. No obvious cause. Our 2025 has been in the shop 5 times already. The 2019? Even more. I’d understand this stuff if we were slamming these things into trees or neglecting maintenance, but that’s not what’s happening. These are just mechanical issues that keep stacking up. All this is happening while we’re right at the finish line on buying a new T86. Honestly? I’m second guessing it. The guys in service and sales have been great, no complaints there, but the reliability just hasn’t been. We need a third machine, and we need it yesterday. Starting to look hard at the Takeuchi TL12 now. We’ll see what happens.show more
