South Africans didn’t just pioneer low level stadium flyovers, they built the Rooivalk, an indigenous attack helicopter that could pull a 360 loop and briefly fly upside down, in 1990. When other countries were still teaching their helicopter pilots how to hover politely, South African pilots were treating a state of the art gunship like a stunt plane. While everyone was saying that helicopters can’t loop because of physics, rotors and gravity, South Africans said, “Hold my biltong, let me show you”, so they put a cannon on the nose, stub wings, missiles and still made it roll and loop.
