तेरे तो और भी होंगे सपने मेरा तो कोई और नहीं #Gulzar #BirthdayWeek #NirmalPandey #InMemories Daayra (1996) was an unconventional and risky film for NN Sippy Productions, Amol Palekar the filmmaker, and, of course, Nirmal Pandey, the lead protagonist in the film, who would have been 64 today if not for his untimely death at the age of just 47. Nirmal Pandey, who graduated from the National School of Drama, was an intense and committed actor. After starting with Mani Kaul's art film Idiot and getting proper recognition with Bandit Queen, he didn't settle for the mainstream and continued to take risks with his roles. Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin, God Mother, Train to Pakistan and Jahan Tum Le Chalo, and, of course, Amol Palekar's Daayra, which was perhaps the biggest risk of his career, in which he played a transvestite and won the Best Female Actor award at France's 1997 Valenciennes Film Festival for his portrayal. Daayra was a highly sensitive film and will be remembered for Nirmal and Sonali's cross-gender acts. It also brought together Gulzar and Anand-Milind for the first time for the music. It still remains a different and sincere effort by Anand-Milind, where Asha ji & Yesudas rendered this very beautiful lori.
