Two critical undersea fibre optic #cables in the #BalticSea—linking Sweden to Lithuania and Finland to Germany—were severed on November 17th and 18th, raising serious security concerns. The Chinese-flagged bulk carrier YI PENG 3 is suspended for its potential involvement. According to reports, the Sweden-Lithuania cable was severed on the morning of November 17th, followed by the Finland-Germany cable the next day. MarineTraffic data reveals that the #YIPENG3 experienced a 7.5-hour transponder signal gap between 15:11:24 UTC and 22:41:44 UTC on November 17th. During this time, the vessel travelled 78 km at an average speed of 10.4 km/h. The laden bulk carrier departed Ust-Luga Anchorage in Russia on November 15th, but its destination remains unreported. The Danish Navy is currently closely monitoring the vessel, and our data confirm that a Danish pilot boarded the ship on November 19th at 07.53 UTC. Dimitris Ampatzidis, R&C Analyst at Kpler, provided further context: "The YI PENG 3 is linked to Chinese interests through its ISM manager (WIN ENTERPRISE SHIP MANAGEMENT), commercial manager, and registered owner (NINGBO YIPENG SHIPPING CO LTD). As of November 20, 2024, neither the vessel nor these entities appear on published sanction lists. However, historical trade data shows the ship has transported Russian thermal #coal and coal from Murmansk and Nakhodka on at least seven occasions. Additionally, in 2022, it experienced two AIS signal gaps in #China, each lasting over 20 hours." Below is the playback of the vessel's most recent movements in the area. #Marinetraffic #Sweden #Lithuania #Finland #Germany
