Corruption in the middle of a pandemic #DuterteLegacy A lot of us wonder why despite the loud call to replace the then Secretary Duque for a lot of reasonable things, the former President still kept him until his last day at the office. Some argued that maybe they have secrets connected to the corruption in the middle of the pandemic and the news yesterday somehow solidifies that theory. Yesterday, the Ombudsman ordered filing of graft charges against the former DOH Secretary Duque and Budget Undersecretary Lao over the alleged irregular transfer of over P41 billion for the procurement of COVID-19 supplies in March 2020. Not just that, they were found guilty of grave misconduct, gross neglect of duty, and conduct prejudicial to the service. I was a frontliner during the pandemic and reading the articles reminded me of a time when I had to stay inside the negative pressure laboratory with my full PPE for 12 hours just because we didn't have enough supplies and we needed to finish testing samples. No chance to eat, drink or even pee. No overtime pay either! I lost friends who were also frontliners during the pandemic because of inadequate PPEs and medicines. Then there’s our patients and relatives! We didn’t even have the chance to grieve. Only those without conscience would even dare think of corruption in the middle of a pandemic. What can I say? Thousands of lives lost don’t mean a thing for some, be it because of Covid or War on Drugs. If the gov’t will dare dig deeper, they will discover pandemic-related corruption.
