A population-based study in Ontario, Canada, examined outcomes for more than 28,000 individuals treated for a nonfatal #opioidoverdose and discharged from the #emergency department. Within 1 year, more than 1 in 5 had a repeat overdose, nearly 9% died, with nearly two-thirds of deaths resulting from another opioid overdose. The 1-year #mortality rate was higher among those with a prior overdose in the preceding 5 years. These findings indicate that the post-discharge period is a time of acute, sustained risk and highlight the importance of low-barrier interventions such as opioid agonist therapy, take-home #naloxone, and rapid follow-up for #survivors. 📖 Read the full article to learn more:
