Exactly 25 years ago today, I scored my first — and only — professional goal. Contrary to what I believed at the time, goalkeepers are not allowed to handle the ball in both penalty areas. The goal was disallowed and I was sent off — still it earned me legendary status. 😉 #otd

It was #OTD in 1987 that Eric Show hit Andre Dawson in the face in the third inning after homering against Show in the first inning. Rick Sutcliffe and the #Cubs bench came running after Show. Once Andre Dawson regained consciousness, he went after Show, who had to leave the game for his own safety. Dawson, suffered cuts on his left-upper lip and a bruise on his left-lower cheekbone and he received 24 stitches inside and outside the mouth. Greg Maddux retaliated by beaning Benito Santiago and got ejected.

Richard Whiteley very sadly and prematurely died #OTD in 2005 at the age of only 61. His terrible jokes and even more terrible puns were a staple of Countdown back in the day. But he was occasionally brought almost to tears with laughter by jokes sent in by the fans at home 👇

It was #OTD in 2014 that Addison Russell was traded to the Chicago Cubs in a blockbuster deal with the Oakland Athletics. The Cubs sent pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland in exchange for Russell, outfielder Billy McKinney, and pitcher Dan Straily. Samardzija was the ace of the Cubs staff, but Addison Russell would become a vital part of the Cubs championship run. In 2016, he hit 20 home runs, drove in 95 runs, was named an All-Star, and delivered a historic grand slam in Game 6 of the World Series. 🎥-Knoxville News Sentinel
