Bollywood has a long-standing history of butchering Muslim history to appease Hindutva sentiments. You must have seen this scene of an arrogant Peshwa Bajirao meeting and scolding the fat & ugly Nizam. In reality, Bajirao saluted the Nizam & called himself his servant. (#Read) It was the custom of the Peshwas of Pune to salute the Nizams of Hyderabad by placing their hand on the forehead and bowing thrice. This was due to their superior rank. Padishah (Emperor) → Nazim or (Viceroy of a division) → Vatandar (Vassal King) → Diwan (Rajah’s Minister). The Peshwa was equal in rank to the Diwan, while the Maratha Chhatrapati was the Vatandar, and both formally acknowledged the Emperor as their lord and the Nizams as his representatives. Tajali Shah, a contemporary, records the meeting between Peshwa Madhavrao and the Nizam, noting that he did not bow (he merely touched his forehead and saluted), which outraged the Nizam, as the former Peshwas (Balaji Vishwanath, Bajirao, and Balaji Bajirao) had all bowed and saluted. Not just that, Peshwa Bajirao said to Nizam in the meeting: “Consider me as your servant. What is past is past. There will be no more misunderstanding between us.” #Reference: Studies in Maratha History, Vol. II by Setu Madhavrao Pagadi. Many argue that the Nizam was forced to cede Chauth to Peshwa Bajirao after Palkhed (1728), but that is not true either. The Nizam did not pay a single dime to him. An akhbar (30/10/1730) by Ganesh Ballal informed the Peshwa from Aurangahad that: “The Nizam is not willing to pay a single penny (dum) on account of chauth. Last year his officers collected Rs. 400 twice from the peasants, but paid nothing to the Maratha sarkar. He is trying to violate the terms of the treaty of Shevgaum.” Many of you may ask why the Peshwas eventually stopped bowing to the Nizams. The answer is rather simple. That was because the Peshwas later received higher ranks and titles bestowed by the Emperor, and themselves became Subahdars, thereby placing them on an equal footing with the Nizams. Eg: Peshwa Madhavrao II held the office of Vakil-e Mutlaq.
