Because Steve can no longer close his eyes, his caregivers remove his eye lenses, apply gel drops, and carefully tape his eyelids shut so he can sleep. His daughter decorates the tape with drawings. Since Steve cannot use his eyes to communicate at night, he uses a special beeper activated by moving his ears. The sound is connected to a baby monitor so his caregivers know when he needs help.
