September 2014: An artillery unit belonging to the so-called pro-Russian separatists has taken up position in Shakhtarsk in immediate proximity to a hospital complex (48.049872, 38.484802). The tactic is to force the Ukrainian army to return fire toward the hospital area.

In April 2013, Igor Girkin outlined a strategy for how to take over another country by force. In 08/2013, Putin said that Ukraine would face ruin if it moved closer to the EU. In 09/2013, Moscow warned Ukraine that separatist movements would emerge in eastern Ukraine.

Girkin’s idea of local separatists overthrowing local Ukrainian institutions was put into practice in eastern Ukraine.

The Russian army intervened in the fighting in Ukraine from the summer of 2014 onwards; without the support of the Russian army, the war in eastern Ukraine would have come to an end in the summer of 2014.
