I started on a2 grips and magpul mags. Gradually moved onto other stuff, and eventually people started paying me to practice on theirs, which is what I’m still doing.

out of pure curiosity -- what would happen if you did not sand down the "OEM stipple" and just went over it?

The shape of it would still be visible to some degree underneath.
