100% a question every history buff has always asked themselves

Criminally underrated show and a shame it wasn't picked up for season 4. Norsemen So good

No. In actual history, colorful clothing and uniforms were used frequently. This whole notion of things being shades of brown is purely so studios dont have to spend more money on extra clothes/uniforms.

No history buff has every asked themselves that. Movie fans without history knowledge do. In reality the fighters dont walk into each other and break fronts into countless 1v1s. Thats a movie thing. In reality your guys are behind you and next to you. Thats it.

#1) Hollywood reuses the same bland colored outfits for cost. Real life they had colors/banners/Sigils. #2) People moved as a unit so the guy infront of you was an enemy and to the side/behind was an enemy. #3) If everyone is the same color its very very very hard. #4) Racism.

Depending on the era, there were things that clearly they thought were obviously different among each group. It is probably subtle cultural and physical attributes or styles. And yea, that's how we ended up with uniforms, flags, heraldry etc etc

Not really. Only in movies do battles end up in a free for all. In reality unless they were raiding or pillaging, actual battles were fought in formation and most of the time one side would retreat if the battle wasn't going their way to avoid catastrophic losses.

Well that is why banners & the whole medieval pageantry became a thing :) Because yeah you are right definently hard to know whos side people are without anything identifying them xD

who would do such a thing

This series is so amazing 👏 Norwegian humor on its best

That look on her face at the end is perfect! 😆

Norsemen. On Netflix now. Like "The Office" meets Vikings. Highly recommended.

The answer is they did fight differently than shown in the Movies closer formation more defined contact lines. And obviously they had ways of uniforms as well. From coloured bands to simple paint. The war paint was not so often applied to the face more to clothing or shields

I love the look on the chick's face, as she slides her arms behind herself. "Not me!"

The problem is that almost NO film shows what medieval battles were actually like. It wasn't chaos, people fought in formations. It wasn't one-on-one combat like in movies like Braveheart. People knew exactly who and where enemy was.

They should have given us a season 4 The chieftain burned his whole family and friends because they made fun of his bald spot

This show needed more seasons. Too bad it came out during the super everything is insulting years

This would be an interesting thing in roman era war against the goths. Slave conscription forced to fight in a battle on a plantation. The Roman's lose. The slave, grabs a sword and "kills" an already dead roman. Pretending he was woth the goths. A wounded roman soldier does the same taking off their armor. Both know the other is lying. Both know they need to keep the secret of each other to survive. Turns into a buddy story between a roman and an eastern European slave, pretending to be goths. Tension as they escape as the roman wants to escape to warn the roman army of a coming surprise attack, the other wants to just flee home. Could be interesting

Best show ever. So crazy it just might work.

Best Viking series ever :-)

I always wondered that. Glad I’m not the only one😂

I understand it's movie studios that use the same dark colors for everything. But how did the Romans who were wearing the same uniform recognize each other during their countless civil wars?

Yeah, this show is so good. And honestly, it's probably more accurate than "Vikings" (Also a great show)

Still sad this show was cancelled.

Wtf are those captions in the bottom bro😭

They filmed every scene twice, in both English and Norwegian? Looks pretty funny. I'll check it out.

Shield decorations? Flags? Direction of attack?

I have always wondered this😂😂

simple, every army both carried a standard (banner) to denote their allegiance and individuals wore clothing with the crest of the army they fought for

Loved this series. First season, anyway.

@grok is this from a movie or series? If so which one?

Norsemen was wild. Actual descendents of Vikings ruthlessly lampooning the serious Vikings show.

Me playing paintball wondering why the enemy isnt calling their hits and doesn't have his gun on him. It's the ref... It's the fucking ref FUUUUUCK...

Friendly Fire, In the heat of battle, other than a distinctive piece of coloured fabric or uniform it is natural to assume this happened . You will literally be in survival instinct mode , anything moving towards you your react to. You're see it in fist fights all the time. And happens in fire fights. The thing that always got me was the " Halt who goes there . Friend or Foe " like a enemy is going to be honest. Unless they don't understand or reply with a accent ?
