100 years ago today, John Coltrane was born. For 20 days, I’ve shared one essential Coltrane recording each day. For the final one, something more personal: a family film edit set to my all-time favorite Coltrane piece: “Equinox”

The Autumn Equinox is today!!!!

Yup! I couldn’t have planned it better.

I have an 8-disc CD collection of Coltrane, most of which is pretty incredible. But honestly, some of it is really difficult to listen to. Musically, he and Miles Davis, pushed music over every limit, and then they would bring it back!

Today’s playlist is vinyl. Coltrane’s genius will carry me through the day!

I've loved John Coltrane since my teens. He had the hunger of someone who treated music as a kind of prayer, moving from tight, hard-bop lines into those long, searching sheets of sound and then further out still. "Equinox" sure hits the sweet spot - a great choice.

I played "Equinox" at a Jazz Recital I had in Undergrad. Coltrane was an amazing artist and shaped jazz in so many ways. That C Minor blues seemed so simple and after many hours of rehearsals I came to realize the simplest progressions are often the toughest. May he RIP
