Cheap soldering irons are available on Amazon for $10. Don’t do this.

I don't see why the current will flow though the graphite, instead of the wires. And why would the wood not burn if the graphite is heating up for real. And also why would there be sparks ?

To Everyone who check the comments for information: I have some; Do not try this at home! That process involves wood and serious heat which can easily lead to fires. Especially! if the switch is faulty! Also if you get something wet somehow wrong you risk exploding the battery.

Nonsense. With that setup the current will just pass from one wire to the other the pencil lead is doing nothing.

Don’t do this! You risk the battery exploding in your face, hands, eyes, and just generally speaking any body part, home, and other this you might not want a hot explosive device to be used against. Including whatever you’re trying to solder. I can’t stress strongly enough that the only situation in which this has ANY VALUE is literally the end of the world or some MagGyver situation we’ve you’re trying to escape certain death or torture. You risk fire, injury, or even worse and for…. What? Not buying a battery or butane soldering iron? You only get one life in this body. Don’t be dumb with it. Once it’s broken down or dead, you kinda have to deal with the consequences.

Because when making something that heats up really hot, the ideal components should include flammable wood and meltable hot glue. Currently nothing more ideal exists.
