Today, anyone in the U.S. can opt into Personal Intelligence for AI Mode in Search on their personal accounts. It’s also starting to roll out in the Google Gemini and Gemini in Chrome. Personal Intelligence allows you to securely connect the dots across your Google apps — like Gmail, Google Photos and more — to provide responses that are uniquely relevant to you. Some examples: 🛍️ Get tailored shopping recommendations based on your recent purchases as well as your preferred brands and style ✈️ Plan a family getaway based on your hotel confirmations and past travel memories ✨ Discover a new hobby inspired by your interests (even ones you didn’t realize you had)

Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ Opt in to connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos. Search connects your info to give you responses that uniquely match your specific context and interests. 2️⃣ Start asking for things like ideas and recommendations, where this is particularly helpful. For example: I wanted new podcast ideas and Personal Intelligence in AI Mode gave me spot-on recs for AI and product building shows that are similar to some of my favorites (hey Lenny Rachitsky!). It even found some unexpected options around dad life working in tech. 🎧

Now Chrome is pulling from your emails, conversations, and browsing activity to act on your behalf. Every new AI feature requires deeper access to your personal data. You're not just paying $20 or $250 a month for convenience. You're handing over your credit cards, government documents, addresses, and browsing habits to an AI that will interact with websites as you. The people excited about this haven't thought through what happens when it goes wrong. An AI filling out government forms. An AI with your credit card making purchases. An AI that hallucinates or gets social engineered. And when adoption isn't fast enough, they'll degrade regular search and browsing until this feels like the only viable option. That's the playbook.
