On December 23, the villagers of Rentian Village in Wenzhou came together to address issues related to the quality of their resettlement housing. They reported that during the construction, the government had forcibly taken their land, even going so far as to uproot wheat crops that were on the verge of harvest to make way for new housing projects. Despite being granted resettlement quotas and some compensation, the villagers were still burdened with substantial housing construction fees. The village committee, according to the villagers, insisted on collecting the remaining payments for the housing even before the completion of the quality checks, which had not been passed. Disturbingly, before the housing units were even distributed, significant structural issues were already evident, with cracks appearing on the walls and exposed, broken steel reinforcement bars visible, suggesting severe construction quality problems.
