Today we remember the 11 U.S. Marines, one U.S. Soldier, and one Navy Corpsman who were killed when an ISIS-K member detonated a suicide belt or vest in the crowd during the evacuation of Afghanistan. Another ISIS-K gunman opened fire after the explosion, killing multiple Afghans and killing and injuring US service members. 45 U.S. service members were also wounded in the attacked, with several losing limbs. This video is the only known footage of the explosion and also shows the chaotic situation that resulted. Our service members at Abbey gate were put in an untenable position by stupid leaders during the embarrassing evacuation of Afghanistan. We commend their bravery and their sacrifice. These young people have been raised under my leadership...carrying a purity, a strength, and a deep respect for God, country, and those who went before us. For those watching overseas...today is ANZAC Day here in New Zealand. A sacred day where we remember the men and women who served, fought, and gave their lives in WWI & WWII for our nation. Few years ago, when I used to ask Russian people on the streets in what ways they were affected by the war, a lot of them said, "Well, we're not affected by the war, it's something on our television sets." But now, you certainly feel that Russians are feeling the effects of the war more than ever. A lot of them know others who've been fighting in Ukraine, who've been getting injured or killed. And Russians are feeling economic effects more and more because of more than four years of international sanctions. And latest polling here in Russia suggests that approximately two-thirds of Russians would like peace talks rather than continuation of the war.

I met with the national security advisors of the Coalition of the Willing member states. Today, three panels were held involving Ukraine’s negotiating team and 18 participants from various countries and institutions. The primary focus was on security guarantees, rebuilding, and a basic framework for a real peace. During our meeting, we discussed all existing draft documents and examined in detail the sequencing of steps: on January 5, a meeting of chiefs of the general staff will take place, followed by a leaders-level meeting in Paris on January 6. After these contacts, we expect a productive joint meeting with representatives of the United States. Now we have a new wave, a new chance to finish this war. And we are thankful that on the diplomatic path, we are also not alone. I thank our partner states and their leaders for their consistent support for our country.

On this Memorial Day we remember those who have given their lives in the service of this nation, and we hold in our hearts the families and loved ones they left behind. For those of us who wore the uniform in combat, this is a day where we remember our friends and comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice. We remember them as they were: sons and daughters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers. And we rededicate ourselves to living good lives, not to waste the opportunity to live on they gave us with their sacrifice. The willingness of some young Americans to sign the dotted line and risk their futures for the good of the nation is a resource we must jealously guard. It cannot be abused and squandered by those in power for their own benefit. The best way to honor the dead is to make sure future generations are not sacrificed for no reason. Semper Fidelis.
