I still have mine from my Atari 800! Always wanted the disk drive but it was like $350 or more than that. Cassette tapes worked just fine and years later I used them to record my first band on a boom box. Good times.

My dad had some games on a few & whatnot stacked up around. in the 90s i was smart enough to figure out how to overwrite them with tunes from the radio, but too nieve to know what i was ruining 😭😭😭 the shame 😅😅

Insane. Within my lifetime! How things have changed...

Yeaaah, that's one aspect of that era that I do NOT miss. Start loading the program tape, go eat dinner, then come back and hope it succeeded. The jump to 5.25" floppy was huge 😁

I've use it a lot!

yep, my very first program on my Commodore 64 was Sword of Fargoal, loaded that up on my cassette drive. I think I still have what's left of that box and the instructions in the basement somewhere.

The hours I spent listening to those tapes loading.....crashing and starting over. What a dream.

When you're a news channel and this guy comes in for the interview, you hire him. And, you hire him simply bec of the views you'll get from his name on the chyron. 🤓 You can't pass up that opportunity!

Did you know @BrianRoemmele that they had pretty extensive text-based role-playin games on those We glued together gigantic maps of A4 on the bedroom floor. Just so being able to track our movements & our findings at each spot. I never had so much fun with RPG than those VIC20

1985-ish had a TRS 80 coco with a tape recorder. Those were interesting times.

Software on a cassette tape. My 4-year-old is going to think I'm making this up.

1972 software on punched paper tape. (Someone snipped the leaders off this one. It's toast.)

Scarfman (PacMan knock off for the TRS-80) loaded from a cassette.

TRS-80 had some badass games on tape. 😄

It’s like Grok Bot is to us today & Brian is helping us by developing the “self teaching manual….” 😂😅

Yeah

Wait to load your OS every time you want to "boot up."

Kansas City format, 300bps

Me 1981: I wonder if you’ll be able to see boobs on it.

I was 18 and remember

😎☯️⌨️

Oh the floppy days are better 😢

It mostly worked :)

Yep, was my first home computer storage methodology. Hundreds of hours of basic programs I wrote were stored on cassette.

I had a book of programs for single games for my Vic20. Hours of typing to play the game for a bit and it disappeared when I shut the Commodore off. Until I got that cassette recorder. It was a game changer back then!

It was beautiful

I've never seen this but it's freaking awesome. Thanks for sharing.

I remember the thrill of realizing that my brother's audio cassette tape player could connect to the RCA plugs in my Apple //e, and the thrill of copying stuff from my 5 1/4" floppies onto ordinary audio tape. Kids these days will never understand the simple joys of life :)

Early synthesizers were the same way (in the early 80's). At least Ensoniq. That's the only way you could save and reload the sounds before cartridges made their way in (EPROM and EEPROM). When listening to it as audio, it sounded like my 300 baud modem communicating.

Young Elon Musk was 10 or 11 years old, living with his father in Pretoria. He was already deep into computers and taught himself to program on a Commodore VIC-20 around that age.

I knew someone who had an Amstrad 464, and he connected an MP3 player with the .cdt files converted to MP3 and used that to load programs.

ah - good times - I actually miss those days. I remember saving my "very cool" stuff I wrote ( hahaha ) on cassettes! :)

Cload. CSAVE

Had one with my Atari 800xl.
