1985 20yo Red Rum

Around 1985, as a local newspaper reporter in Liverpool doing a story on Red Rum, I was in his stable with him and his groom. He offered to leg me up on Red Rum’s bare back. I’ve always regretted not saying yes but on the evidence of this video I’m glad I declined!

Red Rum at 20 still had more class than most winners on the page. Five wins in the National and still the yardstick.

1977 - I was 8, middle of three sisters. My Dad gave us the choice of watching The Grand National or going to see the matinee of the ABBA movie…..I was outvoted and went to the pictures….i was gutted

Lester Piggott won a 5 furlong race on Red Rum back in the late 1960s. I'm not sure if it was at Redcar.
