Is Traditional Software Engineering Dead? “Does this mean that traditional software engineering is dead? Absolutely not. Software engineers—even the ones who are not necessarily tuning or training AI models—these are now among the most leveraged people on earth. Sure, the guys who are training and tuning models are even more leveraged because they’re building the tool set that software engineers are using. But software engineers still have two massive advantages on you. First, they think in code, so they actually know what’s going on underneath. And all abstractions are leaky. So when you have a computer programming for you—when you have Claude Code or equivalent programming for you—it’s going to make mistakes. It’s going to have bugs. It’s going to have suboptimal architecture. So it’s not going to be quite right. And someone who understands what’s going on underneath will be able to plug the leaks as they occur. So if you want to build a well-architected application, if you want to be able to even specify a well-architected application, if you want to be able to make it run at high performance, if you want it to do its best, if you want to catch the bugs early, then you’re going to want to have a software engineering background. The traditional software engineer is going to be able to use these tools much better. And there are still many kinds of problems in software engineering that are out of scope for these AI programs today. The easiest way to think about those is problems that are outside of their data distribution. For example, if they need to do a binary sort or reverse a linked list, they’ve seen countless examples of that, so they’re extremely good at it. But when you start getting out of their domain—where you have to write very high-performance code, when you’re running on architectures that are novel or brand new, when you’re actually creating new things or solving new problems, then you still need to get in there and hand code it. At least until either there are so many of those examples that new models can be trained on them, or until these models can sufficiently reason at even higher levels of abstraction and crack it on their own… And remember: there is no demand for average. The average app—nobody wants it, at least as long as it’s not filling some niche that is filled by a superior app. The app that is better will win essentially a hundred percent of the market. Maybe there’s some small percentage that will bleed off to the second-best app because it does some little niche feature better than the main app, or it’s cheaper, or something of the sort. But generally speaking, people only want the best of anything. So the bad news is there’s no point in being number two or number three—like in the famous Glengarry Glen Ross scene where Alec Baldwin says, “First place gets a Cadillac Eldorado, second place gets a set of steak knives, and third place you’re fired.” That’s absolutely true in these winner-take-all markets. That’s the bad news: You have to be the best at something if you want to win. However, the set of things you can be best at is infinite. You can always find some niche that is perfect for you, and you can be the best at that thing. This goes back to an old tweet of mine where I said, “Become the best in the world at what you do. Keep redefining what you do until this is true.” And I think that still applies in this age of AI.”

Agents: Quick thoughts & questions on how they operate, their potential, and their limitations A Few Observations - ▶️"Book me a hotel" or "pull historical financials" are already (mostly) solved problems!! Agents can do a ton of tasks right now—like parsing public company press releases and navigating capture key info & complete bookings accurately. However, for more complex navigation flows, the tech still needs some work - but I'm very confident it’s essentially a solved or solvable challenge. ▶️Accuracy & Speed - The key metrics and agents should optimize for. ▶️Lower Build & Migration Costs It took me two minutes to build a new website (link: This is great for consumers—more choices, lower switching costs. Companies will increasingly compete on the quality of their products and services. ▶️Agents vs. Automation tools: The more I think about it, the more I realize that most “agents” are really just automation tools—kind of like how most robots🤖 are just machines lol ❓A Few Key Questions—Would Love Your Thoughts! ❔Remote Servers & Logins In many cases, we’ll want agents to act on our behalf (e.g., log in to to cancel an order). How will platforms like respond? Many websites may block remote servers for security. Is there a technical workaround? ❔Agent Generalization Do we need to train agents on each environment separately, or can one solution handle multiple sites and systems? This seems similar to RL/post-training challenges in AI research. Example: It's unclear to me whether $Devin was specifically trained on environment? ❔Frontend vs. Backend infra for agents to run on I had doubts about Anthropic's "Computer Use" feature, which seemed to run on the frontend, basically remotely controlling my computer so I couldn’t use it at the same time. This should deliver the highest accuracy, but it’s questionable how practical it really is. (Ref: It seems def possible for agents to work quietly “in the background” (like Devin) rather than remotely controlling a user’s PC, but how much accuracy are we sacrificing? A few $Devin test cases that got me thinking: 1⃣Pulling $META's MAU and DAU (1Q21–3Q24) into Excel (video attached) Took Devin 11min - it sent me back an Excel with 100% accurate data. This case was pretty tricky because $Meta changed disclosures and stopped reporting MAU/DAU after 4Q23. Devin didn’t hallucinate data for post-4Q23—it simply didn’t provide it! It really shocked me to see $Devin navigating $Meta's investor relations site (I didn't tell it to find the numbers there), opening each quarterly earnings report, and extracting MAU/DAU like a diligent intern. -> This confirms $Devin (and similar agents) can already accurately “read” screens. 2⃣Booking Hotel (video attached) Devin took 5 minutes to book the InterContinental NYC on after asking for my credentials. From $Devin's workspace, I could see it filling in the correct fields and making the right selections—fast and accurate overall. Interestingly, $Devin didn’t supply all the required information on the first attempt and got some error messages, then retried until it succeeded. It’s unclear whether Devin had been specifically trained on interface or simply learned to adapt on the fly. 3⃣Canceling the Booking This part was even more interesting. While booking didn’t require me to log in, canceling did—so $Devin had to access my (likely via a remote server) account using my Gmail credentials. It successfully canceled the reservation. I wonder how websites will handle future “remote” logins. Notably, Google blocked $Devin’s direct attempts to log in to Gmail when I specifically requested it. 4⃣Booking from Official Hotel Sites I asked Devin to book InterContinental NYC and Four Seasons Boston via their official websites. It made progress but encountered technical hiccups when trying to select the check-in/check-out dates. Insights from Scott Wu on Invest Like the Best: 1/ Self-Driving Cars as the First “Real Agents” Driving requires near-perfect accuracy (99.999%), making it much more demanding than digital or coding agents, which can tolerate more errors. Scott compares $Devin to circa 2014—already good enough to save 90% of your effort, but still short of flawless. 2/ Impact on Collaboration Platforms Tools like Slack and GitLab are likely to see major changes as agents begin to interact with and utilize them along with humans. 2025 should be all about agents - both the disruptors and those they disrupt!

My feed has been inundated with posts of Grok 3 making basic arcade games. But llms from years ago could make decent arcade games, not news. So I ran a one-shot test to determine how well it fared again other frontier models in creating a 3D game with room for it to come up with gameplay and aesthetics. I tested Grok 3, O1, Sonnet 3,5, Llama4, DeepSeek, and Gemini using the following prompt. Make Dune x Minecraft 🏜️ Imagine a sandbox survival game set on a desert planet. Players mine ‘spice’ and must build defenses against roaming sandworms. Design the main gameplay loop, crafting system, and survival challenges in one complete description. ✏️tldr O1, Grok 3, and Sonnet 3.5 were the most impressive. Aesthetically, Grok nailed the best vibes (it even produced a surprisingly cool-looking spice mining truck), but the game lacked functionality. O1 took the top spot imo with a functional and visually appealing experience, and Sonnet 3.5 followed closely. This is obviously just one test, but you can see the generated code and games in the thread (and even try forking them on Rosebud). Longer summary: OpenAI O1: Best vibes to function balance. Looked good, working controls, I could mine spice. xAI #Grok3: Excelled at generating vibes for dune. I especially liked the Dune-inspired spice mining car—though it wasn’t entirely a complete game. I could move around, but none of the crafting mechanics worked. Anthropic Sonnet3.5: produced something in space that had dune vibes. More functional than Grok because I could mine spice. However vibes were worse than the first two. DeepSeek : Managed to generate code that worked, but the game was so hard it always ended seconds after it started, and despite requests for better visuals, it looked VERY ugly. Google DeepMind Gemini 2.0 flash and AI at Meta LLaMA: Sadly landed at the bottom of the list; after multiple prompts (this was supposed to be one shot and none of the others failed in the first shot), I couldn’t get them to produce working code for this prompt. All of these were tested on Rosebud AI . An obvious limitation with these frontier models in their chat interfaces is that you can only get them to regenerate code from scratch each time you prompt them, making it tough to refine or extend a single project. Rosebud, on the other hand, lets you iterate on one project (we do diffs), deploy with one click, share your project, and even allow others to remix it. This was just a single test, so it’s obviously not scientific. I wanted to create it to see how these frontier models handle more complex game prompts—rather than retrying the same arcade games that earlier generations of LLMs have already mastered.

I've built a multiplayer survival game for the browser in 30 days and I didnt write a single line of code 🤯 So I'd like to write my notes about it once the deadline is done now. The last 20% of a project is indeed the hardest part of it all. In the last 2 days i've been working on the final version of Hollowlands for @levelsio's 2026 #vibejam I worked a lot! I fixed a lot of bugs, tested a lot playing with my wife. Fixed more bugs... But now, thank God, I have the final result! The game looks good, yes. I've spent half of the jam just tweaking every single detail of the procedural world generation. And It was worth it! The game still runs well on most devices and still has less than 20MB in size. Which is pretty impressive to me. The process of building was very straighforward: 1. I used Three.js + React to create the game. Before I started I created a huge document defining every rule i'd like the codebase to be implemented upon. It had clean code rules, archtecture decisions, ECS principles (good for games), and so on. This helped a lot constrain the AI to maintain the code maintainable and separated into clear domains (systems). This document was made partially by me given my previous experience building web games (I've made a lot of mistakes in the past and made sure they will not repeat again) and partially AI suggesting best practices. 2. For every feature I prompted the AI, I was very specific on details that I'd like implemented. If I knew what I was doing, I was more specific on the "how" I wanted to be done. If I didnt know what was doing I first asked the AI to brainstorm possibilities with me, based on industry standards, pros and cons, and so on. Then I would decide what path to go. 3. Every single feature I used Leva for tweaking the values. So for example, the size of the trees, colors, distance between objects, animation speed, etc. Everything I have a slider that I can adjust. 4. To make the game look good I used Tripo to create the models. To be honest it's not 100% perfect. If you check the character in game you can notice a few issues here and there (the arms lol), but I believe that it will keep getting better over time. 1 Year ago I tried and it wasnt even close to what it's now. Then I used a few post-processing + shaders + particles techniques to bring the "wow" factor. 5. I did only 1 feature at a time. And every change it was a commit with a clear message of what was done. This helped the AI fetch previous commit to understand what changed and know exactly what happened in the past. If I opened multiple terminals at once and blasted prompts the code and commit history would be a mess in a few days. And for every change the AI did, I asked it to do a Code Review of everything that was changed and look for violations on the document I wrote in the beggining defining the codebase guidelines. I realized that I pretty much applied software engineer principles using AI: Code, review and merge, code, review and merge... 6. On the last week I implemented the multiplayer using Colyseus ⚔️ which was pretty nice. I used AI to fetch the whole documentation and create a skill.md file that helped a lot. The creator of the framework Endel also did a extensive research on how real multiplayer games are implemented. It's open source and it was a gold mine for the AI to come up with the implementation for my game. You can ask him the link :) And that was it I think. I'm extremely tired now. The last 2 days was insane. The game's final version is not what I had in mind in the beginning of the jam. I had to cut a lot of cool features. But given the 30 days deadline I think it was a huge success. Hands down my best game ever made. Now I'll take a few days to rest and come back with more updates on the game. Maybe it can become a big deal in the future with more updates. Who knows. And in the event I win first place in this game jam, I'll use the money to fund my own game studio + cover the expenses of my child that is going to be born in September :) Cheers guys!
