The crash happened at 1:59 pm AEST when a departing helicopter (VH-XKQ) collided with an arriving one (VH-XH9), resulting in the departing helicopter crashing on a sandbar, costing lives of four, including the pilot, and critically injuring three others. The arriving helicopter, despite substantial damage, managed an emergency landing on the sandbar, with its six passengers suffering mostly minor injuries. The incident, witnessed by many, prompted immediate aid from bystanders and led to a comprehensive investigation by Queensland Police and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, focusing on pilot visibility, communication, and operational procedures.
