One year later, I visited Khartoum, the beautiful capital of Sudan, and I am speaking to you today from in front of Al Salam Hotel, one of the city’s most prominent landmarks. A year ago, these streets were engulfed by war and armed clashes. Today, however, the scene is different. Although the devastating scars of war are still clearly visible, life is gradually returning to the capital. The money being spent on their war is coming from overseas. In fact, by the end of the day, I think they may actually have profited from it. Not a penny of their own has been spent, while countless people — hundreds of thousands of people — have fallen victim to their madness.
