Anyone remember General Zod? One of the last games of the Bitmap Brothers and also one of their best, in my opinion. Z from 1996 was such a blast. Yes, I know, Command & Conquer was published a year earlier and was more complex (and turned into a massive franchise), but I always felt that Z deserved more credit and got a bit lost in the shuffle. Great graphics, an epic soundtrack, and some fun units (who doesn't love the Psychos?) were sadly still not enough, and despite some excellent reviews, sales numbers were pretty low. Earlier games from the Bitmap Brothers, such as Speedball 2 or Xenon 2, were commercially much more successful. Maybe it was the fact that the RTS genre was already quite saturated (Dune II, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Command & Conquer), and that pushed Z into the offside a bit, who knows. Did you play it back in the day and liked it?

Let's take a trip back to the year 2000! Behold, the power of mother Russia! Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 (Westwood Studios, 2000) is hands down one of the best RTS games I ever played. Hard to believe it's been 26 years since its release. My love for Westwood Studios started with Dune 2, so naturally when the original Command & Conquer was released, I had to get my hands on it. And so it began, the journey through all the sequels. Red Alert 2 was is simply bigger and better than it's predecessors (which were already great), had some iconic cutscenes, great acting (well, for a game) and of course Agent Tanya! A single player campain (Allied or Soviet) and a multiplayer option (LAN or online) - for 2000 this game had everything. I miss Westwood...

Made by Beam Software, a small Australian studio, it had a cool Mad Max vibe, like a rough, post-nuclear wasteland world. It didn’t have the big fame of Command & Conquer, but it was still excellent, especially for a game made by a smaller team with a tiny budget compared to a giant like Westwood Studios/EA at the time. Early 80s games had some of the best sound effects. The lasers, the explosions, and that "outer space" growling-noise... super eerie! Zaxxon (1982) was one of my favourites at the time. The 3D isometric graphics were the first of that kind I had eevr seen in a game. Normal "shooters" were vertically or horizontally scrolling - not diagonally. Not just eye-candy but requiring you to adjust height levels throughout the game, making it feel way more challenging. I don't think there was a game before Zaxxon that had this kind of design, right?

Sure, from today's perspective it looks outdated, the graphics a bit clunky, the rendered cutscenes will at best get a "pass", but for anyone who plated RTS games in the 90s, Warcraft 2 was among the best. There was a time when Blizzard just rolled out incredible games: Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft, and then World of Warcraft - all four of those had such a massive impact on the gaming culture. The number of RTS games published in the 90s is massive. Obviously, not all were top-notch, but KKnD (Krush, Kill 'n' Destroy) was a real badass. Developed by Beam Software, an Australian team, it had that Mad Max vibe with its dystopian, nuclear-devastated world. It felt like the floodgates opened after it paved the way for an entire genre. Yes, there were others before it, but in terms of depth, playability, graphics, cutscenes, three different (and playable) factions, and digitized speech, it was unbelievably awesome. I can only name a handful of games that captured me the way Dune II did - it was a rare gem. Controlling units individually feels tedious from today’s perspective, but it never bothered me back then. I guess you can’t miss what you don’t expect. Instead, I was totally hooked - not just on the game's concept, but also on how it was presented. For 1992, the graphics (for a strategy game) were impressive, the cutscenes had that Cinemaware quality, and the music and digitized speech added to the "I am right in the middle of this" vibe. Of course, I started with Atreides, but over time I - and probably you too - switched to the "dark side" and played Harkonnen and Ordos. The Harkonnen Devastator (epic name) was so badass. I sank countless hours into this one, an unspeakable amount really. It was an absolute blast in both single-player and multiplayer. In conversations about the the all-time greats, games mentioned are usually Dune II, Command & Conquer, Age of Empires, Warcraft, and StarCraft - and all deservedly so - but in my opinion Rise of Nations also belongs in that uppermost echelon of RTS games ever made. One of the features that felt more strategic were the visible influence of borders. You could only build inside your own territory, and expanding it was a core strategic layer. Entering enemy territory caused attrition (units slowly took damage over time), encouraging smart expansion and defense, you couldn't just blindly run in. It also had 18 unique civilizations, each had distinct Nation Powers and unique units (e.g., Romans got extra territory, Mongols had powerful cavalry, etc.), giving strong asymmetry without breaking balance - a very tough balancing act in any RTS game with such diverse civilizations. I would assume that you were of fan of RTS games during that era, you also invested a fair bit of your time into this one...

I know some people would pick Defender of the Crown or It Came from the Desert, but for me, Wings stood out with its great graphics, music, design, and overall feeling of immersion. The career mode and mission briefings felt like you were in an old war movie. It was also really tough, especially the dogfights. The sound effects when your plane was hit by bullets always let your heart sink a little. Cinemaware didn’t last very long, and I’ve always wondered why a studio that made so many good games couldn’t keep going. Sure, piracy was a big problem in the 80s and 90s, and that hurt everyone, not just them. Still, it’s a shame they only laste from 1986 to 1991.

Because of this, consoles like the Hyundai Comboy and Samsung Game Boy series were officially released in Korea, but they were expensive, so they didn’t sell particularly well. Duke Nukem 3D was the first game we ever played in a LAN setting. Whether at an internet café (now a thing of the past, like Blockbuster) or a friend's house, those LAN sessions were legendary. Hauling a 17" monitor, tower, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and cables was quite a sight - especially on public transport. The stares from the older generation (who, I now realize, are my age!) were priceless. The graphics, epic sound effects, legendary weapons, and Duke's total badass attitude made it truly emblematic of 90s gaming. I don't think I ever played a better LAN game.

Westwood was such an amazing game studio. One of their timeless classics is Eye of the Beholder 2, which was released in 1991. The intro alone gave me nerd chills - anyone who ever played Dungeons & Dragons would remember Khelben Blackstaff, and if he considers you his friend, what an honour! The game itself is your typical dungeon crawler. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way but appreciating it for what it was and is, a great game of its genre. Excellent graphics (I am such a sucker for that 90s pixel style), good sound effects and music, and an easy to use interface, making the real-time fights fast paced but manageable. Among the greats of Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry, the likes of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore were probably a tier below, but I always loved coming back to them. To me, this game is emblematic of the early 90s, and for that I love it.

The one that stuck with me was Dragon's Lair, but there were so many more mentioned in the comments that I had totally forgotten about. Today, I want to turn the question around - games that looked rather basic (or even poor) but had incredible gameplay. So, basically the polar opposite of Dragon's Lair. The choice for me was rather easy: M.U.L.E. (Ozark Softscape, 1983). Back then the graphics were ok but nothing to write home about. However, the reason why this game still has such a cult following and so many fans today - over 40 years later - is its gameplay. I never had more fun in a multi-player game. The land grabing, the auction system, supply and demand principles, and the many last second buy/sell antics have lost none of their charm. It's a game that aged beautifully because the concept and gameplay are as good today as they were back then. If you had to pick a game that ranks rather low in terms of presentation but fascinated you for its gameplay, which one would that be?

The SR 71 could takeoff with a full tank of gas. It was called a rocket ride. But to do so they needed to do a yo-yo. The last official Air Force flight was in 1990 .SR 71s were reinstated briefly in 1996. The Air Force generals were jealous of the SR 71 they wanted the money for their own special projects. That’s why it was retired. The U2 is still flying the SR 71 should be also.

40 years ago today, Ace of Aces was released. It's probably a bit too old for some of the people who follow my account but it was certainly way ahead of its time back in 1986. Superb graphics, excellent sound effects and a story/gameplay that felt highly immersive - those are the things that I remember when first playing this as a kid. Not an easy game by any means but it got you hooked fast. I am not enough of a history buff to know whether the missions were somewhat realistic but I would like to believe so. The mission briefings and the "interactive" map during the game added to that feeling of authenticity. We used to turn up the volume for this one, especially for the intro and cutscene when the mission starts and the black and white picture slide show started, with the overlapping sound effects at the 0:30 mark - it still fascinates me to this day. That cutscene uses a total of six colours and it still looks absolutely incredible.

We used to turn up the volume for this one, especially for the intro and cutscene when the mission starts and the black and white picture slide show started, with the overlapping sound effects at the 0:30 mark - it still fascinates me to this day. That cutscene uses a total of six colours and it still looks absolutely incredible.
