My view is that the United States does not really have extensive security or even economic interests that are advanced by having 40,000 US forces in the region. Instead, the effect is that anything that happens in the region pulls the United States in. And there aren’t many countries in the region who are excited to see the US military show up, for good reason, after repeated failures, and making bigger messes than when they arrived. So I do think that the US military presence is a liability, does not advance US interests, and certainly should be downsized. There is concern about the cooperation between Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, but not that much that US policymakers can do to stop it. Instead, it’s really the opposite. So I do think that the US military presence is a liability, does not advance US interests, and certainly should be downsized. There is concern about the cooperation between Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, but not that much that US policymakers can do to stop it. Instead, it’s really the opposite.
