This is the first real AI cold war. Anthropic is HIDING secret spy code inside its most popular coding tool. The code was designed to identify Chinese users without their knowledge. Now Alibaba has banned every single Anthropic product from its entire company. And the full picture is way more insane than either side wants you to see: On June 30, a security researcher on Reddit reverse-engineered Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding agent that has deep access to every file on your computer. What they found buried inside the software was genuinely disturbing... Since April 2, Anthropic had been silently shipping hidden detection code inside every copy of Claude Code. The code checked whether your system timezone was set to Shanghai or Urumqi. It scanned your proxy settings against a hardcoded list of Chinese corporate networks, specifically targeting Alibaba, ByteDance, Baidu, and Moonshot AI. But here is the part that made security researchers lose their minds: The code did not send a normal signal back to Anthropic's servers. Instead it used steganography, a technique from military intelligence, to hide its findings INSIDE the text Claude was already generating. It swapped invisible Unicode characters in Claude's system prompt. Changed a standard apostrophe to one of three visually identical but technically different characters depending on which flags triggered. Switched date formats from dashes to slashes. Invisible to the human eye. But perfectly readable by Anthropic's backend. The detection logic was XOR-obfuscated to prevent anyone from finding it during a code review. It shipped with zero disclosure in the release notes. Three months of silent surveillance baked into a tool that has full access to your local file system. An Anthropic engineer confirmed the whole thing on X on July 2. Called it "an experiment we launched in March that was meant to prevent account abuse." Said the team had "been meaning to take this down for a while." The code was removed on July 1, one day after the Reddit post went viral. Three months of covert user fingerprinting. Removed the day after someone found it. Described as an experiment they forgot to turn off... Now here is where it becomes a full blown corporate war: Three weeks before the backdoor was discovered, Anthropic had sent a letter to the US Senate Banking Committee accusing operators linked to Alibaba's Qwen AI lab of running the largest model theft campaign in the company's history. 25,000 fake accounts. 28.8 million queries over 44 days. All designed to copy Claude's reasoning capabilities and train a competing Chinese model for free. So the sequence reads like this: Alibaba allegedly steals Claude's brain using 25,000 fake accounts. Anthropic responds by secretly embedding surveillance code inside Claude Code to catch them. A Reddit user catches Anthropic doing it. Alibaba uses the discovery as justification to ban every Anthropic product from its entire workforce effective July 10 and force 200,000 employees onto its own tool, Qoder. The thief caught the cop planting a wiretap. And now the thief is using the wiretap as evidence that the cop is the real criminal. Alibaba classified Claude Code as "high-risk software with security vulnerabilities" in an internal notice reported by the South China Morning Post. Meanwhile Anthropic is simultaneously fighting the Pentagon over a blacklist designation, lobbying Washington to crack down on Chinese distillation, and getting caught running the exact kind of covert operation that makes their "responsible AI" branding look like a punchline. Alibaba allegedly ran the largest AI theft operation ever documented. Anthropic secretly built invisible tracking into a tool with root access to your computer. The US government restricted American access to the very models China already copied. And a random Reddit user with a debugger exposed the whole thing.

Amodei: “I have engineers within Anthropic who say: ‘I don’t write any code anymore.’” They don’t touch syntax. They don’t debug loops. Models generate flawless code. Humans curate, validate, direct. The job isn’t building anymore. It’s conducting. The transformation happened silently. While bootcamps taught React, the actual profession mutated into something unrecognizable. Still typing functions manually? You’re not being diligent. You’re already obsolete and haven’t realized it. Amodei: “We would make models that were good at coding and use that to produce the next generation of model.” The loop closes. AI writes the code that births superior AI. Recursion without human dependency. Once sealed, progress stops being gated by people. Only by semiconductors. One year. Requirements to production, fully autonomous. Humans set strategy. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei just revealed the hidden bottleneck that will kill most AI companies in the next 18 months (Save this). The insight comes from a principle in computer science called Amdahl's Law. Dario's argument is simple when something starts working really well inside an organization, you have to immediately ask what isn't working well around it. Amdahl's Law states that the maximum speedup of any system is capped by the fraction you haven't improved and that applies to companies just as brutally as it applies to processors. If you can suddenly write three or four times as many pull requests as before, you don't get three or four times the output but you rather get a pile of code no one can review, verify, or trust. The data makes this impossible to ignore. Teams with heavy AI coding adoption are merging 98% more pull requests but PR review time has ballooned 91%, deployment velocity is effectively flat and 96% of developers don't fully trust AI-generated code reaching production. AI generated code produces 1.7x more issues per pull request than human written code, 0.83 issues per PR versus 6.45. Veracode's 2026 State of Software Security report found that 82% of organizations now carry security debt, up 11% year over year, with critical security debt surging 36% in a single year driven directly by AI-generated code reaching production faster than security teams can handle. What Dario is describing is a systems problem, not a software problem and coding is roughly 20% of the software delivery cycle. Even at infinite coding speed, you're still bottlenecked by review, security, verification, testing, and deployment which make up the other 80%. The enterprises that win are the ones that identify which part of their system is the new constraint after AI accelerates the old one and fix that next. This is why Anthropic's Claude Code focuses on the full development loop, not just generation, and why the verification and security layer of the AI stack is where the next wave of enterprise value gets created. This is also why Anthropic as a company is positioned differently than most people realize. Anthropic's 2026 Agentic Coding Trends Report found that organizations using full-loop agentic coding workflows where AI handles not just generation but testing, review, and deployment validation reduced their software defect rates by 43% while increasing velocity by 2.8x. Claude Code now authors 4% of all GitHub commits and is on track to hit 20%+ by year-end, with the full-loop use case growing 3x faster than pure code generation. Advice from Brandon for anyone looking to work on a platform team: "You should try to work at a tech company for a year or two and actually see what happens after you ship a system — and then the assumptions change! You then have to figure out how to keep this thing going. You get a bunch of software design intuition because you have to like re-evaluate your assumptions for an incredibly long time. If you can do that, you're probably ready for platform stuff." 𝟯. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 “𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲” 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲. LLMs integrated into IDEs seem to be increasingly helpful with backend, fullstack, web and even cross-platform (React Native / Expo) projects. However, Reddit’s mobile team shared that they get a moderate boost from the Apple and Android Studio LLM additions. Native mobile development is distinctively different from web, fullstack and backend coding – and it seems that these IDEs with AI functionality have not done much to optimize for the expereince of native mobile engineers. Over time, this will likely change – but it’s a reminder that there are differences between fullstack, backend and native mobile development.(I wrote a book reflecting on more of the challenges unique to native mobile titled Building Mobile Apps at Scale)

Code is free speech in Las Vegas. In a federal courtroom in Manhattan, code is forty years in a cage. That is the whole story of Roman Storm, and I put it to music. He came to this country from Russia with $500 in his pocket. Odd jobs. Learned the language. Taught himself to write software. Built a company on nights he didn't sleep. The immigrant success story we are told this nation is made of. Then he wrote privacy code. Open source. He published it, the way you publish a book. He asked lawyers first. They told him it was legal, because it is legal. On August 23, 2023, around six in the morning, a SWAT team surrounded his home. Rifles up. His three-year-old daughter awake in the house while armed federal agents pointed weapons at her father's head. Not for stealing. Not for hacking. Not for touching a single dollar of anyone's money. He never held your funds. He could not hold them if he tried. The code has no operator. The address is zero. It runs on its own, on every node, in every country, right now, while its author stands trial. Here is the part they do not want you to sit with. They sanctioned his protocol. Then a federal court said they had no right to. Then Treasury quietly delisted it. The government reversed itself on the code, and then it kept prosecuting the man who wrote it. The FBI Director stood on a stage in Vegas and called code free speech. His own Justice Department wrote a memo saying stop prosecuting developers for what their users do. Then they walked past their own memo and came after Roman anyway. They convicted him on one count. The jury hung on the rest. A normal government takes the hint. This one is retrying him on October 26. Forty years for writing software you can still download today. This was never about Tornado Cash. It is about whether writing code can be a crime. In 1999, Bernstein v. DOJ said source code is protected speech. If that dies with Roman, no developer in America is safe. The chilling effect is not a side effect. It is the point. They pardoned others. They cut deals for others. Roman they kept on the docket, because he was effective, and because privacy is the one thing the surveillance state cannot allow.
