because there is a cost of spending crisis. that's why. no matter how much tax is collected, it will still not be enough.

You really are an idiot. The reason that your father could buy a house in the 60s was because women weren't in the workforce in the way that they are today. Women's lib effectively watered down the economy. A socialist project.

Hi Gary, you have said several times how wealthy you are. You have also said the wealthy should pay more tax. If I show you how to voluntary pay more tax, would you like to do that? I can share the link with you if you wish.

Free up the under 35s by scrapping the Student Loan debt ( a 9% forever tax ) Raise the basic tax threshold to £20 k . Do a 2% wealth tax but also have inheritance taxes EXCEPT on working farmers ( not aristos or 'investment farmers' ) changed to 50% after the first £10m estate

The man’s off his rocker. Needs another line to set him right. Then he’ll tell us it wasn’t big enough (the line that is).

Top 1% already paying 30% of tax. Are they a different breed of human that you think you’re entitled to their money?

Sorry but look at how the current tax revenue is spent and then tell me you want to give Government even more money to spaff away, and that’s assuming these suggestions would actually generate any more revenue and not be counterproductive.

Name a country that has ever generated even half that amount from wealth taxes? 🤡

God forbid - the country might turn into success like China which would be really bad from ideological standpoint. Better rot in dignity with the rest of the country, stand in queues and love the queen.

Gary doesn't understand inflation. Printing £ = more £ = devalued £. The wealthy tend to hedge against inflation, by investing. It's not rocket science. Taxing the rich isn't going to solve anything. His documentary was an embarrassment...

So all you'd do is drive wealth away. You're a fool Gary.

We're talking about individuals with the wealth tax but what about the trillion dollar companies operating in our countries hoovering up housing/farmland right now? Your Blackrocks and Vanguards then inflating their price by selling it to their own shell companies? Increasing local rent rates as a result. To me that and a few other places is where we need to go first.

@GeorgeHarrison just told me Gary's right. I sussed out some reefer, blazed it up, alpha waves rolled in and he explained that Taxman was against 95% tax, not a 2% wealth tax...

Haven't you had enough humiliation yet?

David Peez's profile picture

Not enough for what? The question's already lost the argument. The UK issues the pound, so £24b was never going to plug anything. Tax the rich because concentrated wealth buys the government. Argue it on revenue and you'll lose to a spreadsheet every time.

This one policy wouldn't solve the entire debt overnight but would take a huge chunk out of it so let's just not do it and allow inequality to keep getting worse? Have I got that right?

@andyburnham - maybe with a change of things is to look at external advisors - maybe @garyseconomics & @MartinSLewis should be ‘Government Advisors for Finance & Investment’ 🤔

This is an interesting take indeed. Not sure about the 90% tho, but yeah. Billionaires should pay way more in taxes and the working class should pay less.

The government wastes money on crap vanity projects and we have just been told that they lost £81b. Where is it? Down the back of the sofa? We need to spend better and tax less.

You say the world “listen” a lot. Why? Do you think we ignore what you are saying? 😂 How about abandoning net 0, how about creating new oil fields in the North Sea and the Falklands, how about treating the state as a productive economic enterprise?

The wealthy borrow against their assets, it give them access to large sums of low interest cash without triggering a taxable event. So why not also introduce a VAT like tax that banks are required to collect from those who borrow against their assets?

£24bn sounds massive until you clock how far the top has pulled ahead of ordinary wages. the gap compounds faster than any single tax closes it. thats the actual scandal.
