A new video was released today showing a Ukrainian T-64BV tank raiding a Russian position in the village of Nove Shakhove in the Dobropillya direction. What I'd like to point to is the lack of destruction here. This village has been actively fought over for around 7 months and has changed hands at least a dozen times. Yet, the houses are still largely standing, with some of them appearing almost entirely untouched. This is a clear result of the shift to FPV drone warfare. Drones are being used more than other weapons like artillery and glide-bombs, meaning that less overall damage is done to settlements while still resulting in large casualties. Additionally, nowadays, Ukraine usually holds a larger presence in the fields, forests, and fortifications surrounding built-up areas, meaning there is simply less places for Russia to target here. There is also a lower overall concentration of infantry along what used to be a sharply-defined line of contact, with frontline infantry now being scattered throughout a 10-20 km corridor of "infiltration zone" at lower densities, meaning that a smaller percentage of overall buildings are occupied. This is why deep infiltrations can occur sometimes, and can be a big risk for both sides. When built-up areas are left largely undamaged, it provides a stretch of cover that infantry or DRGs can use to infiltrate deep behind enemy lines. An example of this is the uninterrupted chain of settlements leading from the frontline in the Malokaterynivka area to the southern suburbs of Zaporizhzhia City. The days of flattened cities like Marinka and Vovchansk appears to be largely behind us, at least for the time being.

Hello, this is Yanis Varoufakis with a piece of news that would have been hilarious if it weren’t so scary. This morning, two policemen appeared on my doorstep to serve a summons ordering me to the police headquarters to be interrogated by the Greek DEA, our drug busting police department. Not as a witness, expert or not, but as the accused. Accused of what? Shortly after New Year’s, I appeared on a podcast organised by young people to answer their questions on everything that concerns Gen Z today: social media, the meaning of life, their job prospects, what I call technofeudalism etc. At some point, they asked me if I had ever used drugs. Determined not to do a Bill Clinton (remember the laughable “I didn’t inhale”?), I said I had. Apart from pot, I told them, I had one experience of taking ecstasy in Sydney 36 years ago. It was pleasant, I danced for 16 hours effortlessly but then, I added, it gave me a migraine for a week – and so I never used again. That was my introduction to making the point that, however pleasant drug taking may seem, there is a price to pay. And that the ultimate price is dependence, addiction – “the end of liberty”, I said emphatically. Do you see where this is going? Yes, the Greek police have opened an investigation of me under the charge of... aiding and abetting the narco-mafia. [Do me a favour folks: Please don’t tell Trump, OK?] Seriously now, at a time of war, genocide, stupendous exploitation and so on, my little trouble with the inane Greek police is neither here nor there. But it is important. Here, in Europe, many people still live under the illusion that we have liberty, rationality and freedom. We don’t. Dark forces are at work, pushing us into a postmodern version of the Dark Ages. So, beware, people! They are out to take away the last remnants of autonomy and freedom we have left. The St Petersburg International Economic Forum 2026, which seeks to present itself as Russia's version of Davos, actually resembles a theater of the absurd. Each session and each stage set is designed to convince visitors of Russia's greatness. Apparently, the situation in Russia is so bad that the task of rescuing SPIEF 2026 has fallen to the apologists of nuclear Orthodoxy - Dugin, Malofeyev, and Bezrukov. It is not economists or development strategists who are being brought to the country’s main economic forum, but rather the architects of the ideology through which the regime explains that war is Russia’s means of survival. The next step, apparently, will be enshrining ideologue Dugin in the Russian Constitution. The report presented by the Tsargrad Institute offers a model of Russia's desired future. The "good scenario" includes, among other things, the annexation of Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv; the collapse of the EU; and the formation of a Russian macro-region in Eurasia. By 2050, Russia is expected to become one of the guarantors of global security, ensure the "triune unity of the Russian people," and bury the "imperialist plans of the West." The "bad scenario" is no less revealing. Russia's defeat in the war is described as the "colonization of Russia," the loss of sovereignty, and Ukraine's accession to NATO. Between these two poles, there is no scenario for a peaceful post-imperial Russia. The regime cannot imagine prosperity without expansion. It does not think about the future in terms of well-being, economic development, or quality of life. It thinks in terms of status, control, and coercion. The key point appears to be the thesis regarding the necessity of "finally overcoming the sovereign worldview." That is, Russian diplomats and Putin himself are being hypocritical when they speak of UN principles and the sovereign equality of states. In fact, this is a rejection of the principle of sovereign equality of states as the foundation of the UN-centered international order - the very order to which Russian and .... Chinese diplomats constantly appeal. In fact, I am not surprised. I know very well that the Russian authorities and Russian diplomacy classify states according to the principle from Orwell's Animal Farm: "all animals are equal, but Russians are more equal." The most dangerous part of the discussion was the nuclear framework proposed by Andrey Bezrukov. It is built on three theses: that the West is allegedly waging an existential war against Russia; that the world is entering an era of prolonged global conflict; and that Russia's nuclear deterrent is under threat. In effect, this creates a political justification that can be used when needed. How should we view this? Much like cancer, because Russia is now developing like an aggressive form of cancer. It must be fought. For the sake of the world's survival, Russia must be deprived of the ability to use nuclear weapons. Another aspect of the report is equally important. Nearly every measure the authors consider necessary for the "good scenario" concerns domestic policy: autocracy, de-Westernization, state planning, digital sovereignty, the cult of the family, and a new Constitution. External expansion is presented as an internal necessity, as a direct consequence of domestic development. First comes ideological mobilization, centralization of power, and the cleansing of the political space. Then comes territorial expansion and the revision of the international order. For now, the Tsargrad report is not an official Kremlin plan. But it should not be dismissed as a fringe fantasy. This discussion took place not at a closed ideological gathering, but at the country’s main economic venue. And it is an attempt by a part of the Russian ideological and security elite to turn imperial war into the official model for the future. Such a model leads Russia toward catastrophe, but its authors cannot see that because they are blinded by their obsession with greatness. Like Putin himself, they live in their own sick reality. And within that reality, they act entirely rationally. The question here is: is there another part of the Russian elite that is more adequate and capable of a sober assessment of reality? Or has the entire Russian elite and society already been poisoned by this worldview, leaving no hope for Russia?

Time for a dose of reality. This 👇is the supposedly smoking gun video that Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said last night had "never been seen before" and "could blow open the entire JFK investigation." Luna said she learned about it from Oliver Stone and said the video "shows Oswald near the vehicle [JFK's limo] when the assassination took place, which means he couldn't have been the shooter." And she told a credulous Jesse Watters, NBC had been "very, very much guarding this tape." A small problem. It is NOT a secret video that has never been seen. It is available for anyone to watch at the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas (or on their YouTube channel). What Rep. Luna is referring to is a clip of a film taken by Jimmy Darnell, an NBC affiliate cameraman who had been riding in the "press camera cars" behind the motorcade. He, and three other cameramen had jumped out of their car after the shots and started filming about 30 seconds AFTER the assassination. Darnell's film shows Dallas police officer Marrion Baker running to the front door of the Texas School Book Depository, and past the TSBD's supervisor, Roy Truly, both of whom would encounter Oswald in less than another 30 seconds, on the second floor. Oswald was on his way out of the building, having come down from the sixth floor after the shooting. Truly vouched for Oswald and Baker let him go. Some conspiracy theorists think that a few seconds in the Darnell film shows a figure on the far-left side of the front of the Texas School Book Depository they believe is Oswald. The figure has been dubbed prayer man, some say because of the way he has his arms crossed in front of him, while others think the conjecture is the equivalent of a conspiracy Hail Mary prayer long shot. For those not into the weeds on the JFK assassination, this is not the first time that a film or photo has been used to try and exonerate Oswald. For many years, conspiracy theorists contended that Oswald was visible in one of the pictures taken by James Altgens, an AP photographer at the scene. Oswald, they contended, was the fuzzy figure in a white t-shirt standing to the left entrance of the TSBD. That was in fact one of Oswald's coworkers, Billy Lovelady. Even AFTER Lovelady identified himself as the person in the photo, some conspiracy theorists refused to believe him. Oliver Stone and others have now turned to the Darnell film and the person standing to the left of Lovelady. Maybe that is Oswald. It is not even clear from the fuzzy image if it is absolutely a white man. It could even be a light-colored black or Latin person. But to Stone and Luna and others, it is Oswald. Thirteen of Oswald’s work colleagues were standing at the front steps of the Texas School Book Depository. They were there to watch the motorcade. Not one of them remembers seeing Oswald there. That has not stopped the conspiracy theorists, who claim the clothing on the unidentified man looks like what Oswald wore when he was arrested after killing Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit. Ten other Texas School Book Depository employees wore shirts like the one on “prayer man.” The entire exercise might as well be a Rorschach inkblot test. That is what happened before in the case, for instance, with a half-inch square portion of Mary Moorman’s badly faded Polaroid taken a split second after the assassination. Conspiracy theorists enhanced it and blew it up and thought they had found the image of the phantom second shooter on the Grassy Knoll, someone they dubbed “badgeman.” They claimed that greatly enlarged pixels identified a rifle and a Dallas police uniform. The enhanced photo only shows shadows and trees, no person, no shooter. Now, Oliver Stone and others believe the only thing preventing an ironclad identification of Oswald in the Darnell film is that they do not have the original first-generation. The Sixth Floor Museum version is a second-generation print of the film that the Museum acquired as part of a personal collection in 2006. No one is certain if a first-generation version exists, but the guess by Luna and Stone is that it must be somewhere in the long-lost archives at NBC. Not quite the same as NBC having, as Rep. Many of us would like to see the clearest possible version of the frenetic scenes that played out in the minutes after the assassination. A map is not a neutral object; it tells a story. Depending on what the map aims to convey, the criteria used to depict control may legitimately differ, and the visual elements applied to cartography adapted. If the objective is to represent tactical dynamics with high temporal resolution: how often objectives change hands, the pace of counterattacks, then it is coherent to assign control as soon as it is demonstrated on the ground and to revise it when new geolocated evidence shows a reversal. If, instead, the intent is to present a clear and stable line of contact at a given moment, then a more conservative approach is justified, delaying changes until uncertainty has largely dissipated. Neither approach alters the doctrinal definition of the grey zone. Let us apply those rules to a recently much debated situation: the village of #Ternuvate in the Zaporijia direction, depicted in the maps below. Geolocated footage emerged in January showing Russian soldiers raising flags at multiple locations in the village, as well as in Kosivtseve to the south and further behind the Haichur river toward Huliailpole. A doctrinal depiction would therefore show the village itself as a grey zone, since Ukrainian positions may still contest freedom of operations there. By contrast, the fields south up to the previous Russian FLOT should be marked as "controlled”, since no Ukranian positions capable to deny movement remained in this open areas, enabling forward assault groups to advance. As per the purple area, it should be marked as a no man’s land, as the AFU abandoned positions east of the river long ago, precisely for this purpose: creating an empty pocket in the open fields, mined, with sensors, designed to detect any advance and target it rapidly with drone and artillery fire. This interpretation is consistent with the artillery strikes visible in the area on Clement Molin’s map (map 2), and with videos of Russian units seen progressing through it. It is also important to point out that soldiers raising flags are not #DRG (Deep Reconnaissance Groups), but forward assault groups. By definition, DRG do not reveal their positions to raise flags; but operate way behind enemy lines, for sabotage, targeting or mapping of enemy positions. In this instance at Ternuvate and the other villages the AFU had scarce positions able to stop progress, which were overrun by the small Russian units and drones. The extensive targeting of hideouts, and last mile logistics by Russian drones in recent months aims explicitly at weakening forward positions to support small assault tactics. The recent successful Ukrainian counter attacks (blue arrows in map 1) will likely restore control to the villages. The fact armored columns were used and immediately targeted by Russian drones in those attempts is itself an indicator the area outside the village was under Russian control, while the village itself was contested. When the grey zone properly applies The grey zone itself should therefore be reserved for very specific situations: areas of genuinely unclear control where both sides are visibly operating. Kupyansk city is a relevant example, as conflicting footage shows activity by both sides in different sectors. The same applies to Kostyantynivka, where multiple Russian forward assault detachments have been geolocated recently, indicating that the southern part of the city and central areas should be mapped as a grey zone. By contrast, open fields between positions are rarely, if ever, grey zones and should not be mapped as such. Treating every exposed area as contested dilutes the concept and reduces analytical clarity, especially because bypassed isolated positions, with a couple of soldiers in hiding who could not evacuate on time, do not equate to the ability to operate and negate control. On mapping methodologies and criticism Criticism directed at some mappers for rarely employing grey zones is therefore unfounded. Their practice of assigning control when one side is the only actor operating in an area is doctrinally sound, especially if it wants to show the most forward advances in a dynamic way. That said, caution is always necessary. Flag-raising footage can be staged, manipulated, or misdated, as seen in Pokrovsk with Skala’s photoshopped and recycled imagery. Likewise, single-man infiltrations do not necessarily constitute meaningful control if they are behind clearly established enemy lines. In this respect, DeepState was justified in keeping the northern part of Pokrovsk classified as grey zone for longer. DeepState’s approach is itself valid, as it aims to provide a high degree of certainty about the situation at a given moment. However, its political alignment sometimes results in entire areas being excluded from mapping, which can delay the acknowledgment of advances. Kostyantynivka again illustrates this tendency: while the city should be depicted as a grey zone, much of the southern suburbs and adjacent fields should already be shown as Russian-controlled, given the prolonged absence of active Ukrainian units there. A person asks Sadhguru, “How much weight training exercise do you recommend?” And Sadhguru answers, “Weight training is not useful, but do 25-50 Surya-Namaskars, it is complete exercise.” First of all, I am not sure why anyone would ask someone like Sadhguru, who is most of the time, in another dimension, a question on exercise and weight training. And secondly, Sadhguru is just plain wrong. Weight (or strength) training is one of the most important aspects of exercise regimen you can include in your daily or 3-4 times a week physical activity because there is great science behind its benefits. I advise my obese or sarcopenic (very poor muscle mass in advanced liver disease) patients to include weight training to improve clinical outcomes. The highest level of scientific evidence showed that standard muscle-strengthening activities were associated with lower risk of death in patients with non-communicable diseases – including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and lung cancer. Another metanalysis showed strong evidence for a considerable risk reduction of strength training for 60 minutes a week, on all-cause death (−15%), cardiovascular disease death (−19%), and cancer death (−14%). The findings of another systematic review/metanalysis support power (strength) training as an effective therapeutic intervention for improving physical function in adults diagnosed with frailty (poor physical function in old age) and patients with chronic medical conditions. In its classical form, Surya Namaskar is not an exercise, and is not aerobic. The energy cost of exercise is measured in units of metabolic equivalent of task (MET). Less than 3 METs counts as light exercise; 3 to 6 METs is moderate; 6 or over is vigorous. American College of Sports Medicine and American Heart Association guidelines count periods of at least 10 minutes of moderate MET level activity towards their recommended daily amounts of exercise. For healthy adults aged 18 to 65, the guidelines recommend moderate exercise for 30 minutes five days a week, or vigorous aerobic exercise for 20 minutes three days a week. Surya Namaskar in its classical form has a measly 2.9 METs and in its rigorous form (some people perform mutated highly active forms of Surya Namaskar to make it feel like an exercise) can go up to 7.4 METs – which requires a lot of jumping and little stretching and no time to chant the Sun God names - does not even come close to strength training by any margin. Those who are part of the Surya Namaskar and Yoga cult would provide anecdotal experiences on its benefits (please see comment section) through non-classical forms and would call it an “exhilarating experience.” Experiences are not scientific, evidence are.
