I am humbled to share a significant milestone in pancreatic surgery: I recently performed the first-ever da Vinci single-port robotic distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy without an additional incision for pancreatic cancer in the United States, approved by both the Institutional Review Board and IDE from the FDA through a 2cm incision inside the belly button leaving no additional scar. This pioneering procedure not only achieved negative margins but also allowed for the thorough harvesting of all local lymphatics, a critical factor in ensuring comprehensive cancer treatment. I am grateful to report that the patient is doing exceptionally well, and it was a privilege to see him in the clinic several days post-operation. The images included illustrate the operating room moments and a snapshot of our follow-up clinic visit with my remarkable ARNP Dana Manzi and myself. This journey underscores the importance of innovation in surgical techniques and the profound impact they can have on patient outcomes. Thank you to everyone who has supported and believed in this work. THANK YOU INTUITIVE SURGICAL FOR DEVELOPING SUCH AN INCREDIBLE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY. #pancreaticcancer #DaVinciSinglePortRobot #women #roboticsurgery #innovations #surgery AdventHealth AdventHealthWFL AdventHealthCFL BayCare HCA Healthcare Moffitt Cancer Center Tampa General Hospital USF Health Medicine USF Health UCF Health FSU Seminoles FLORIDA UMiami Health System Miller Medicine FIU Intuitive Medtronic Johnson & Johnson Olympus Boston Scientific NVIDIA Women in Surgery WomenSurgeons SAGES is in Vegas in 2027! Explore state-of-the-art multimodal prompting in our new short course Large Multimodal Model Prompting with Gemini, taught by Erwin Huizenga in collaboration with Google Cloud. One interesting insight from this course: with multimodal models, prompt structure matters significantly. Placing text inputs, such as a patient's medical history, before image inputs, like an X-ray, can enhance the model's ability to contextualize and interpret visual data effectively. In other contexts, such as image captioning, you may get better results by putting the image first. Multimodal models behave differently than text-only LLMs, and effective prompting for models varies depending on the model you’re using. In this course you’ll learn how to effectively prompt Gemini models. Gemini's multimodal capabilities also enable new approaches in AI application development, for example: - The Gemini library handles various video formats (MP4, MOV, MPEG), streamlining applications using these formats. - Large context window (up to 1 million tokens) enables processing of extensive content, like analyzing multiple 50-minute videos simultaneously. - Function calling feature integrates real-time data (e.g., current exchange rates) into model responses. The course demonstrates building multimodal applications with real-world examples including document analyzers that reason across text and graphs simultaneously, video content extractors that find and timestamp specific information from multiple hours of footage, and automated expense report systems processing receipt images while cross-referencing company policies. ICYMI: Brains are trending.. OpenAI made a direct investment into Merge Labs' $252M Seed at $850M valuation Merge Labs Labs is a Brain-Computer Interface ("BCI") research lab co-founded by Sam Altman, Alex Blania, & key frontier tech leaders (below) with expertise in neuroscience, bioengineering, hardware, AI systems, & foundational research. Unlike Elon Musk's Neuralink, which utilizes surgical implants, Merge Labs is developing non-invasive, high-bandwidth brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). The company uses a combination of ultrasound, AI-driven signal interpretation, and potentially genetic engineering to read neural activity without surgery. Founding Team: Alex Blania (Alex Blania) – Co-founder of World, an Altman-co-founded digital proof of human protocol; co-founder of Merge Labs. Sam Altman (Sam Altman) – CEO of OpenAI; co-founder of Merge Labs participating in a personal capacity. Altman has been reported as likely to serve in a strategic role but not in day-to-day operational management of Merge Labs. Mikhail Shapiro (Mikhail Shapiro (same on bsky)) – Professor of Chemical and Medical Engineering at Caltech and founding scientific leader for Merge Labs. He has also served as an adviser to Forest Neurotech. Sumner Norman (Sumner L Norman) – CEO of Forest Neurotech, a nonprofit research organization focused on ultrasound-based brain-computer interface technologies; also a co-founder of Merge Labs. Sandro Herbig (Sandro Herbig) – Identified as a technology entrepreneur and co-founder of Merge Labs with prior systems and product experience, including work with Blania on Tools for Humanity and World. While specific current corporate title at Merge hasn’t been publicly detailed, he is recognized as part of the founding leadership team. Tyson Aflalo – Chief Scientific Officer of Forest Neurotech prior to Merge Labs; co-founder and technical lead at Merge Labs with expertise in neural engineering and ultrasound BCI research. . . . "It’s a direct investment from OpenAI, not their venture arm, so it’s an actual collaboration. As we were discussing the investment, there were many different dimensions where collaboration could make sense. One area is protein design. We’re working extensively with proteins, and that’s an area that’s broadly interesting to OpenAI. It’s one of the most compelling applications of AI — for example, the work Google did with AlphaFold. More broadly, AI has significant implications for biology and for accelerating that part of what we’re building. Another area is chips. Eventually, once we have a clear scientific understanding of what we’re building and how it will work, a major focus for many years will be on making these chips highly energy efficient."

08. 02. 23 THANK YOU, WAGNER! WE WORK... The training course for war correspondents at the Wagner PMC has been completed. Today Evgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin came to us to take tests and talk about the course program. Despite the fact that our classes were more than educational, cool, informative - I don't even know what epithets to choose, I really liked everything, despite being fully booked these days and pleasantly tired. So, despite all this, the experience of our course will be used to improve the program, PMC Wagner has a thorough approach to everything, and our course was no exception. I managed to ask him a few questions, I'll tell you later. We also discussed the meme " WAGNER-BUNNIES " that was born on our course, thanks to the wonderful instructors. Before leaving, we spent a few hours at the shooting range, worked with the AK, PM and SVD, we were given chevrons and personal tokens, and we went our separate ways. My Donetsk was waiting for me, from tomorrow my military correspondent's everyday life will begin again. Wagner, thank you for your care, for your knowledge, for being there! I love you and hope to see you again! Yours, Maryana Naumova By rates: * Invitation * Day 1 - road, accommodation * Day 2 - equipment and work at the training ground * Day 3 - theory, medicine, work on the training ground * Day 4 - engineering and sapper work, orientation * Day 5 - Practical Tactical Medicine * Day 6 - work at the training ground, tests, receiving chevrons and tokens * Live broadcast on Channel One about the courses for war correspondents

New short course: Build Long-Context AI Apps with Jamba. Learn about state space models (SSMs), which have emerged as an alternative to transformers! Specifically, Jamba is a hybrid transformer-Mamba architecture that combines strengths of the transformer with ideas from SSMs. This course is built with AI21 Labs and taught by Chen Wang and Chen Almagor. The transformer architecture is computationally expensive when handling very long input contexts. But there's an alternative called Mamba, a selective state space model that can process very long contexts with a much lower computational cost. However, researchers found that the pure Mamba architecture underperforms in understanding the context, and gives lower-quality responses. To overcome this, AI21 developed the Jamba model, which combines Mamba's computational efficiency with the transformer's attention mechanism to help with the output quality. In this course, you’ll learn about how state space models, and Jamba, work. You’ll also learn how to prompt Jamba, use it to process long documents, and build long-context RAG apps. - Learn how Jamba combines transformer and state space model architectures to achieve high performance and quality - Use the AI21 SDK, with an example of prompting over a large 200k-token annual financial report of Nvidia - Use Jamba for tool-calling, with hands-on examples from calling simple arithmetic calculations to a function that returns quarterly company financial reports. - Learn how training for long context is done, and the metrics used for its evaluation - Create a RAG app using the AI21 Conversational RAG tool and build your own RAG pipeline that uses Jamba and LangChain. By the end of this course, you'll learn how to build applications that can handle context as long as an entire book. Please sign up here:
