30 years ago today, Alice in Chains released Unplugged, and this performance of Down in a Hole still hits just as hard. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell turned heartbreak into something unforgettable. One of the greatest MTV Unplugged moments ever.

22 years ago today, we lost the legendary lead singer of Alice In Chains, Layne Staley. Undoubtedly one of the most referential musicians of the 90's. Here is Layne Staley with Alice In Chains performing "Would", MTV Unplugged in New York, 1996. #AliceInChains

“Nutshell” originally appeared on Alice in Chains’ 1994 EP Jar of Flies, but it gained one of its most powerful interpretations during the band’s MTV Unplugged performance in 1996, one of the last major shows with Layne Staley. Even more stripped-down and vulnerable than the studio version, the acoustic performance laid bare the loneliness and pain in Staley’s lyrics. Marked by the band’s visibly emotional delivery, it has since become one of the most revered performances in Alice in Chains’ catalog, especially in the years following Layne’s death.

Not only is today the 30th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death, it’s also the 22nd anniversary of Layne Staley’s passing. Alice in Chains’ MTV Unplugged might have been the very best. RIP

On this date in 1996, Alice In Chains Unplugged aired on MTV. With the entire 90's Alice in Chains songbook available, they produce an extensive cavalcade of brilliant, blistering, poignant music. With all respect to Pearl Jam, this may be the finest Unplugged ever recorded.

ALICE IN CHAINS released the single "Bleed the Freak" 35 years ago today this month. "The song is us against the world, those people who put you down," Jerry Cantrell said in the liner notes of 1999's 'Music Bank' collection. "I put up with many years of you putting us down and watching us bleed — now I'd like to see you bleed some back."

“Black” – Pearl Jam Released in 1991 on Ten, “Black” was never issued as a single, yet it became one of Pearl Jam’s most defining songs. Written by Stone Gossard with lyrics by Eddie Vedder, the song is about the aftermath of a breakup and the emotional difficulty of letting go. This clip comes from Pearl Jam’s MTV Unplugged session (1992) and is often cited as one of the most powerful moments in Unplugged history.

Yesterday I posted about how MTV Unplugged was a real challenge. Get up on that small stage without the amps, without the wall of distortion, and see if you can still hold an audience. Alice in Chains picked up the gauntlet. They passed with flying colors. April 1996, Brooklyn Academy of Music. Layne Staley was already deep in the struggle, but that voice still cut through everything. Jerry Cantrell’s guitar work stayed sharp and heavy even when it was stripped down. The whole band sounded locked. “Rooster” was the one that hit hardest. No theatrics. No hiding. Just the song, the weight of it, and a room that went completely still.

Alice in Chains performing "Man in the Box" on ABC's In Concert in 1991 is one of their best live performances. Layne Staley was incredible, and Jerry Cantrell's guitar tone is absolutely crushing. Have you seen it?

The world heard “Nightmares of the Bottom” for the first time on MTV Unplugged in 2011. Lil Wayne was one of just 3 rappers to ever perform there. He made it unforgettable.

On this day in 1977, Rumours by Fleetwood Mac was released, and somehow turned absolute emotional chaos into one of the greatest albums ever made. It’s not just an album, it’s a reminder that sometimes the mess fuels the magic. All these years later, Rumours still sounds just as raw, honest, and unforgettable...🎶
