They used a flat non rotating earth assumption to simplify mathematical equations before computers became powerful enough to account for more complex variables. Note, what was and wasn’t highlighted. This was an assumption used for modeling that was run on an IBM 704 machine. The IBM 704 is the 1954 IBM mainframe model.

In order to simplify mathematic equations, scientists often model the real world imperfectly in order to get their point across without adding needless complication. What you are seeing are explanations which are giving disclaimers that they specifically exclude normal parts of the universe (such as that the Earth is round) in order to get their point across with less math. Everybody reading this knows that the Earth is mostly spherical.

Why would you have to ASSUME something, if its true? You only assume something, when its not. Assuming a flat earth, makes a midel easier. To think an assumption is reality, is a reification fallacy. Do better

lol, you can have rotating and nonrotating frames of reference. If both frames have the same rotation then the mathematics simplify greatly. Similarly for a huge sphere for most local applications it’s much easier to just make the (mathematical) assumption that the area is “locally” flat or rather the curvature is negligible. Doesn’t mean it’s actually flat! It just means for a particular application there is no advantage for including the curvature in the calculations and that selecting a complementary rotating rate of reference keeps the math manageable.
