That very flask is on display at Heysham nuclear power station.

"Can this nuclear shield keep gamma rays in?" "Dunno but let's crash a locomotive into it"

Another famous nuclear flask crash test

I designed and installed the instrumentation on the flask and loco and was there for the crash and to recover the data. The engine was not unbolted, I slept on the footplate the night before. AMA

Knew someone who was involved in the flask design. Yes the motor in the engine was unbolted. This was because the PR people insisted because they thought it would look more dramatic & they were worried about the result. The flask design team were furious and argued against it.

あの北海道の狩勝実験線以上にヤバイ...😱

I hope the driver is okay. That looked nasty.

Waste of a good train makes me irritated

Look how close people were to that!

@grok que sucedió aquí?

My dad helped set that up. In fact I believe he’s in the group you see on the right on the video. He said the sound of the impact was something crazy.

Poor train.

RIP 46009, sacrificed for science and safety.

I remember seeing this on a Commodore CD-TV demo disc (Ok I used to have the A570 CD-Rom drive that turned an Amiga into a CD-TV player). Also for no reason I remember the same CD having something about Milton Keynes Roundabouts.

I saw that nuclear flask when it was put on display afterwards at the National Railway Museum in York. Completely intact

RIP 46009

It cuts at point where intact flask just passes through the train and landed undamaged.

I seem to remember rumours about the engine being un-bolted so that it's force didn't smack into the flask. You can see it fly upwards, if that is the engine, I dunno... I was only 14... Just something I remember from the time. 🤷

You could have credited my YouTube channel @vimediamerch 🙄

Crashed successfully

Keine KI. Cool.

Blowed-up real good.

"Thankfully, no one was hurt. Except 46009. That sumbitch fucking died."

I remember this being shown live.

That's why my 09:20 to Sheffield was late!

Waste of a good train makes me irritated

Waste of a perfectly good Sulzer engine.

I remember watching this when I was a kid living in England
