47 years passed since its first appearance but its impact is still the same as it was in the first place. It was May the 16th, 1978, just before 3 days from the release of Dire Straits' epic single 'Sultans of Swing' which is in their self-titled album. The...

This band you'll watch came out of nowhere in a day of the year 1978 when they released their debut album they called Dire Straits. The album seemed unsuccessful at first glance until the song 'Sultans of Swing' became a hit in Netherlands. Then the story was re-written. They called themselves Dire Straits as they were in a desperate situation financially. That name now is an indelible mark of rock music. Not me, not you, not them, none of us can ignore Dire Straits anymore. After their debut album's huge success, they started to perform at different venues. The song 'Sultans of Swing' was already a completely different tune and on the other hand, album's other songs like 'Wild West End' and 'Six Blade Knife' showed the prosperity of the band. The date is now 18th of July, 1979, it's been a year and 2 months since the release of -Dire Straits- debut album. The very young band took the stage with the most successful song of their debut album, Sultans of Swing. Mark Knopfler is smiling while playing the unforgettable notes of the song while his bandmates also perform the song with great expectations for their future. Dire Straits performing their greatest hit of all time, Sultans of Swing, live at British TV Show Alright Now, on July the 18th of 1979. I enjoy so much while creating posts like this, hell, hope you enjoy this rare and lovely performance too. That's it, Good night, now it's time to go home, then he makes it fast with one more thing, We are the Sultans, We are the Sultans of Swing.

Origins of Sultans Of Swing, The guitarist and vocalist Mark Knopfler had written it in 1977, after ducking into a deserted pub one rainy night and witnessing a lousy jazz band. Undeterred by the lack of both talent and punters, their lead singer finished the set with a mildly enthusiastic, “Goodnight and thank you. We are the Sultans Of Swing.” During an appearance on Brian Johnson's 'A Life on the Road Season 2', Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler spoke about one of Dire Straits' most well-known track - 'Sultans of Swing'. Originally released in 1978 on Dire Straits' debut album, the 'Sultans of Swing' was a "dusty little jazz, Dixieland jazz band" that was playing down in Deptford. Knopfler described the pub as almost empty, except a couple of lads playing pool at the end of the pub in their baggies and platforms. Knopfler told UCR, "I think they were actually surprised they had an audience of three or four. "I remember asking them to play 'Creolo Love Call' or 'Muskrat Ramble.'… I think they were amazed that somebody was in the pub who actually knew a few of the titles." "I was just there to have a couple of pints. And at the end of the night, the trumpet player or whoever does the announcement says, 'Well, um, right... That's it; it's time to go home.' "And he says, 'We are the Sultans of Swing.' And you couldn't be less a sultan of anything, you know, if you were in that band, on that night, in that pub," Knopfler chuckled.
