Girls do not want to have to text you for 2 weeks before going out with you. You do not have to “win her over” or “warm her up” over text before getting the meet, either. I am seeing more and more guys do this (especially Gen Z guys). I have a 28-year-old client who met a very cute girl who liked him a lot at a bar. They had an amazing conversation that went for an hour. Talked about all kinds of things! This girl really dug him. They traded numbers, he sent an icebreaker text, she responded enthusiastically, and then… He didn’t message her for two weeks. I asked him why and his response was that he’d been busy and he wasn’t in her area (he’s in the suburbs and met her when he drove into the city). It wasn’t that he didn’t like this girl. He REALLY liked her! He just… never followed up… I see this kind of thing often. Guy meets a few girls, gets their numbers, likes them, doesn’t follow up. Or he follows up once or twice, the girl responds fine each time, then he just lets it drop off. Look: you do not need to send her 20 text messages to get a date with her. With most girls, if they are into you, you can send them 2 or 3 texts then arrange the meet. You do not need to make this complicated. When you get their number, you send an icebreaker: “Great to make a new friend! — [YOUR NAME]” or “Hey [HER NAME], it’s [YOUR NAME]! Save my number!” You put YOUR NAME in that icebreaker text in case she forgot it (people are bad with names and it’s too awkward for most girls to be like “Hey, sorry… what was your name again?” Just write it in your text and she doesn’t have to do that). Then, THE NEXT DAY or at most 2 days later, you send your ask-out text. Have the four parts in there: 1️⃣ Greeting with her name 2️⃣ Consideration for her 3️⃣ Information about you 4️⃣ Check her schedule e.g. “Hey Isabelle! [1️⃣] Hope the dental appointment went well and you still have all your teeth. [2️⃣] I actually spent all day at the beach on Sunday and turned a bright shade of red (whoops). [3️⃣] Anyway, let me know your schedule this week for that bite or drink. [4️⃣]” You have enough in that text that she has stuff to chew on, and you are often going to get a reply that tells you when she is free to meet. After that, you just pick a time, tell her the place, and now you can see her again, IN-PERSON. No need for two weeks of texting. No need for NOT texting her at all and just letting it ghost. There is no need to overcomplicate things, and you also do not want to PROCRASTINATE. Just fire off the right texts for her, set up the date, and now you can spend time with her again in-person instead of letting that connection die on the vine.

2 days before the fire Pacific Palisades citizen John Alle expressed grave concern with Mayor Karen Bass. Alle challenged Bass on leaving Los Angeles with known wind conditions after a dry season. Yesterday, after almost 16 months, John Alle bravely stepped into the spotlight. This video captures the recording from 1/4/25 - just 2 days prior to the unnatural disaster Palisades fire that should NEVER have happened. - Bass left with NO Deputy Mayor of Public Safety who had called a b*mb threat to City Hall. - Bass left with a 1/1 fire still smoldering on state grounds above the Palisades due to a protected plant. - Bass left with up to 40% of fire apparatus not available or inoperable. - Bass left her Fire Chief who Bass later fired. - Bass left the Palisades with a reservoir nearly empty and limited water pressure as a result. - LA City predeployed limited fire people the day of the fire. Bass erased all texts despite requests from LA Times. - According to LA Times Bass then conspired to impact the LA Fire After Action Report. As citizens we demand to know what happened. City and State claimed complete immunity and judge denied thank goodness. We want all discovery NOW. 1) Address these allegations. We want to understand fact from fiction. 2) Set policy that doesn’t allow for this to happen to any other community in Los Angeles ever again. 3) Learn from this ineptitude and gross negligence. John Alle, thank you for your bravery and willingness to speak up. This is the exact moment a daytime road rage incident turned into an absolute brawl. She targeted a pregnant woman, but wait until you see what happens when the cops track her down... The incident occurs just before noon on a four-lane road. Surveillance footage captures Brockwell exiting her white vehicle and rushing over to another white car stopped ahead of her. She pounces on the car, opens the driver-side door, and attacks the driver—who witnesses later identified as a pregnant woman with a baby inside the vehicle. Brockwell briefly walks away but abruptly turns back to aggressively confront a nearly 70-year-old woman who attempted to intervene. A cell phone video recorded by a bystander shows Brockwell h1tting, $cratching, and screaming at the older woman. Following the multi-person brawl, Brockwell flees the scene in her vehicle. Orlando police officers quickly locate Brockwell nearby in a Target parking lot. An officer commands her to sit down and keep her hands out of her pockets, informing her that she is a suspect in a battery incident. When the officer attempts to place her in handcuffs, Brockwell resists immediately. She begins screaming and thrashing as the officer p1ns her against a wall. As a second officer arrives to help subduing her, Brockwell bit*s one of the officers. Brockwell continuously yells, demanding to know why she is being detained. The officers repeatedly state that she is under arrest for battery. While officers wait for backup, witnesses approach to give their statements. One witness explains that Brockwell cut the pregnant woman off at a light. When the victim hesitated on whether to move forward or backward, Brockwell blocked her car, opened the door, and "be@t the crap out of her." The witness notes that when she and the older woman tried to intervene, Brockwell turned her aggression on them. From the ground, Brockwell tells a completely different story, yelling, "The b*h came and approached me! She came out of her car and approached me! She put her hands on me first!" Brockwell also screams at the officers for not reading her Miranda rights. An officer replies that they are not currently questioning her. The situation escalates further when Brockwell deliberately tries to injure herself. To prevent her from injuring herself further and to stop her from thrashing, the officers employ a hobble restraint (a device used to secure a suspect's legs). Brockwell screams at the top of her lungs, claiming that her arm is broken and dislocated, and complains that "five people against one person" is unfair for a 120-pound woman. Once her legs are successfully bound, officers roll her onto her stomach to secure the second handcuff, noting that her fingernail had broken off during the struggle. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) or the Fire Department are called to the scene to evaluate her. Brockwell faces multiple charges stemming from the initial road rage assaults and her subsequent violent resistance against law enforcement. Here are the details of what happened to her after the incident: The state filed multiple heavy charges against her stemming from both the initial road rage assaults and her violent behavior during the arrest: Burglary of a Conveyance with Assault/Battery: For jumping on the victim's car hood, forcing her way into the driver's side door, and hitting the pregnant woman. Battery on a Person 65 Years of Age or Older: For attacking and scratching the older bystander who attempted to intervene. Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer: For biting the Orlando police officer's wrist while resisting handcuffs. Resisting an Officer with Violence: For physically fighting and thrashing against the responding officers. Current Status Released on Bond: Shaffer-Brockwell was booked into jail but has since been released after posting a $20,000 bond.

Before she fled Uganda into exile, Stella Nyanzi had already collided head-on with the full force of Yoweri Museveni’s regime. Arrested, jailed, and publicly humiliated, Nyanzi became one of the most defiant and controversial voices challenging authority. In one of the most shocking incidents, she was detained over accusations of insulting the president’s mother—an episode that stunned observers and ignited fierce debate. When she finally left Uganda, many assumed exile would quiet her fire—that distance would soften her voice. They were wrong. Instead of retreating, Nyanzi escalated. Through bold, unapologetic poetry and relentless criticism, she continued to take aim at the regime, proving that exile had not silenced her—it had amplified her. Now, with questions swirling around the health of Janet Museveni—following claims by Proscovia Nalweyiso—Nyanzi has once again entered the spotlight. Resuming her provocative poetic attacks, she targets Janet Kataaha Museveni, a long-standing adversary, with words that both shock and captivate. As we examine some of her most striking poems, one message becomes impossible to ignore: this is more than personal rivalry—it is a warning. A warning to leaders who trample on democratic principles. You may drive your critics out of the country, but you cannot erase their voice, their talent, or their unyielding determination to challenge what they see as injustice. Exile, in Nyanzi’s case, is not silence—it is a louder stage. YouTube -

Patch 0.12.3 - "Blades of Ezochi" is now released! Patch 0.12.3 is a minor update patch that includes 3 new classes, some rules updates and a lot of changes to classes. Earthcleaving and Searing Lotus style are two elemental style sword classes, one of which is an anti-tank and the other a tank. Another paladin has also been added with gun paladin. A lot of classes have seen some key abilities redesigned or changed. Some of these such as backlash were too easy to use and lacked counterplay, while other such as defensive flexibility were resourceless defenses that warped the game around having them or not having them. Some other less used abilities have gotten some number buffs to make them less clunky to use. For the basic rules, precise attacks now have pinpoint by default to make them a better option against dodgy targets who often would still have enough guard to negate most of the damage. Block now works against damage in general, giving more of a reason to take it over simply dodging everything and making failed save damage have some counterplay. As always, thank you for your support. Rules Precise attacks now gain Pinpoint. Some abilities do not gain it. Added a Push basic action. Block reaction now works vs damage in general and not just attacks. Updated rules for abilities to state all abilities as general rule require you to have line of sight to it. Races Ryujin Dragon Breath now has the Safe keyword. Classes NEW: Gun Paladin, a ranged support/striker hybrid. Earthcleaving Style, an anti-tank earth melee striker. Deadeye Disarming Shot mana cost reduced from 3→2. Death Knight Call of the Grave AP cost reduced from 3→2. Dragoon Can be Jiangshi instead of the jumping expertise now. THREAD: A Missouri woman is wanted for questioning in connection to a fire that damaged, & in some areas destroyed, 4 businesses in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, a hot spot for tourists. Police believe the woman, Danielle Bertothy, is back in the U.S. after leaving the island following the fires. On the night of January 1st, a woman, believed to be Danielle, was seen on video, at Bar Marea. She appeared, to staff, to be intoxicated. After serving her two shots, they say they told her they would serve her no more. An argument took place shortly thereafter. Staff called police. According to the bar’s owner police escorted the woman to her AirBnb, which is across the street from the bar. The woman returned a short time later and got into another argument, according to the bar’s owner, who again called the police, and who again took the woman back to her AirBnb. The police stayed at the restaurant until it closed. Then, everyone went home. “Two hours later we got a call that everything was on fire,” the bar’s owner told me. There is surveillance video that shows a woman walking by one of the establishments with what appears to be a red plastic gasoline can. ** The owner of the Airbnb told me that due to the island wide blackout on December 31, a generator and a red gasoline plastic can (filed with extra fuel) were delivered to the home so that the Airbnb guest would be able to have power.*** The owner of the AirBnb rental identified Danielle Bertothy as being the woman who rented the home, checking in December 30. She was expected to check out January 11th. According to the AirBnb homes owner, Danielle left the AirBnb around 5am on January 2nd, roughly 5 hours after the fire was started. I tried to reach her by cell but got a voicemail. A person named Danielle Bertothy works for HLK, a brand building agency in Saint Louis, Missouri. The agency released this statement: “we were shocked to learn about the events in Puerto Rico. We have not been contacted by law-enforcement in either Puerto Rico or Missouri, but we are ready to cooperate in their investigation if asked. After learning about this, we chose to place the named individual on suspension immediately pending further information. We are outraged by the senseless act and hope the authorities can address it in a timely fashion.” Four businesses suffered major damage in the fire: They are: Luichy’s Seaside Hotel, Bar Marea, Marinera, & Artesania Juavia. I found a number, which according to available records, is linked to Danielle. It’s not. The person who currently is the owner of that they have been flooded with calls and voicemails and even received death threats directed at Danielle.

HERMES AGENT LEARNS FROM ITS OWN MISTAKES. UPDATES ITS MEMORY. CREATES ITS OWN SKILLS. NO CLOUD. EVERYTHING STORED LOCALLY. THIS IS HOW THE SELF-IMPROVING LOOP WORKS. most agents start from zero every session. Hermes carries forward what it learned. THREE MEMORY SYSTEMS: 1. PROCEDURAL MEMORY (how to act) stored in ~/.hermes/skills/ as SKILL.md files. when the agent repeats a complex workflow, it saves the procedure as a reusable skill. next time the same task comes up, it follows the skill instead of figuring it out again. you can also create skills explicitly: "create a skill called video-prep that captures how I format my video scripts. spoken english, define jargon inline, no em-dashes, close with a catchphrase." the agent writes the SKILL.md. available as a slash command from that moment. Hermes ships with 90+ skills. the number grows the longer you use it. 2. SEMANTIC MEMORY (durable facts about you) stored in ~/.hermes/memory/memory.md the agent scans conversations for facts worth remembering. preferences, habits, corrections, project details. real example from the video: agent tried to scrape a YouTube channel. URL was wrong. it failed. it updated memory.md with the correct URL pattern so it never makes the same mistake again. you can also save explicitly: "save to memory that my favorite testing framework is pytest" the agent updates memory.md immediately. this file loads into context on every session. the agent knows you better every week. 3. EPISODIC MEMORY (chat history) stored in ~/.hermes/state.db (local SQLite). every conversation. every tool call. every result. searchable with FTS5 full-text search. "search our past sessions. what was the first thing I ever said to you?" the agent queries state.db and finds it. over time, auxiliary models consolidate episodic memory into semantic memory. distilling recurring patterns into durable facts. THE SELF-IMPROVING LOOP: every agent run follows this cycle: → you send a prompt → working memory loads: SOUL.md + memory.md + relevant skills + chat history → agent calls tools (terminal, browser, delegate_task) → agent completes the task, replies to you → AFTER the reply: agent checks "did I learn something worth saving?" → if yes: updates memory.md or creates a new skill → next session starts smarter than the last this happens automatically. you don't ask the agent to learn. it decides what to remember on its own. WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT FROM CLAUDE CODE: Claude Code has memory too. but Hermes stores everything locally. no cloud. your data never leaves your machine. Claude Code doesn't auto-create skills from experience. Hermes turns repeated workflows into reusable procedures. Claude Code memory is instruction-based. Hermes memory is conversational and self-updating. over months of usage, Hermes builds a knowledge base of your preferences, your projects, your mistakes, and the procedures that work for your specific workflow. the agent that remembers your birthday also remembers why your last deploy failed. NO EMBEDDINGS. PLAIN TEXT. Hermes does not use embeddings or RAG for memory. skill and memory search runs on plain text keyword matching. simpler. faster. no vector database to maintain. works entirely offline on your local machine. DELEGATE TO CLAUDE CODE: Hermes can spawn a sub-agent that runs Claude Code in headless mode: "spawn a sub-agent using Claude CLI to build a Python script that fetches the top 5 Hacker News stories to markdown." Hermes delegates. Claude Code writes the code. result returns to Hermes. Hermes runs the script and delivers the output. use Hermes for orchestration. use Claude Code for heavy coding. both tools. not competitors. WHAT HERMES DOES NOT HAVE: no built-in eval or LMOps system. no LangSmith, no LangFuse integration out of the box. trajectory export and logs exist but there is no automated quality tracking. if you need eval, build it yourself or connect external tools. the loop is self-improving. measuring how well it improves is on you. comment LOOP and I'll send you the configs that control how fast Hermes learns and what it remembers. memory limits, skill auto-creation triggers, and the auxiliary model that runs the learning. Replace your entire team with 8 hermes agents👇

‼️ CANDACE OWENS JUST CALLED OUT THE WHITE HOUSE FOR GHOSTING HER — Then Dropped the FOIA Receipt on the WHCD Email 👀 She opened tonight’s podcast by confirming the White House press team is still completely ghosting her about that bombshell email she exposed regarding the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Zero response. Zero denial. Just silence. But she’s not waiting around. Candace just filed a FOIA request for all the relevant White House correspondence dinner emails — and she’s confident she’s about to get the receipts. (She even joked she slept with her Bridget doll last night because it’s been that rough of a day 😂) Then she pivoted straight into the fire: she’s sitting down live with Victor Marx — the same “fascinating” (her words) Turning Point Faith figure who was the first to announce Charlie Kirk’s death… and ended up inside Erika Kirk’s home “comforting” her hours after the assassination. She straight-up called it the dawn of a new series: “Fantastic Pastors and Where to Find Them.” The timeline around Erika and her inner circle keeps getting weirder by the hour. This interview is going to be nuclear. FOLLOW Candace Owens, RT and watch the full episode now — link below. The establishment doesn’t want any of this discussed. That’s exactly why we have to amplify it.👇 ⚠️ Right now, my channel is facing targeted attacks to bankrupt me and silence the truth surrounding the Charlie Kirk assassination. If you believe in independent journalism and want to ensure this investigation stays alive, your support makes all the difference. 💪🔗

//The Wire//2300Z March 5, 2026// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: MERCHANT VESSEL STRUCK BY EXPLOSIVE FASTBOAT IN PERSIAN GULF. DRONE AND MISSILE ATTACKS REMAIN CONSTANT AMONG GULF STATES. DRONE STRIKES REPORTED IN AZERBAIJAN.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events- Persian Gulf: Attacks on merchant shipping continue as an oil tanker that was anchored off the coast of Kuwait was struck by Iranian forces overnight. The vessel has been identified as the M/V SONAGOL NAMIBE, an oil tanker that is currently anchored in the group of vessels that are waiting for the risks in the Strait to subside. Analyst Comment: Turns out, in such a small waterway, it's just as dangerous to remain at anchor. This strike is also different from the rest, as video evidence confirms that this was the result of a (possibly remote-controlled) Iranian fastboat conducting a strike on the vessel. For context, the Iranian Navy is split into two parts, the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy (IRIN), which is the more traditional navy comprised of Line ships, and the Islamic Republic Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN). The majority of the IRIN has mostly been sunk over the past few days, however the smaller "speedboat navy" of the IRGC-N was created solely for the purpose of conducting asymmetric warfare, and is likely the culprit of this attack. As there are a few dozen other tankers parked immediately adjacent to the one that was struck, it is likely that more of these attacks will take place, as long as the IRGCN is able to. Iran: Within the mainland itself, the large-scale bombing of Tehran and other major population centers continues alongside the bombing of most military bases throughout the country. Yesterday Israeli forces shot down an Iranian YAK-130 training aircraft, which had somehow managed to get airborne, and drone attacks launched by the Iranians continue as before. Azerbaijan: Iranian forces launched a drone attack on the airport in the border town of Nakhchivan. The main terminal was hit by Shahed-type drones, and another undisclosed location in Shekarabad was also struck. Analyst Comment: This is noteworthy as Azerbaijan was one of Iran's only regional allies. As a result, Azerbaijan has demanded an apology, and diplomatic relations are not great as two people were killed during the strikes on the airport. Officially, the Iranians have denied that they carried out the attack, stating that it was a false flag incident. -HomeFront- Utah: Overnight a killing spree was reported spanning multiple counties, involving multiple casualties. The incident began after an assailant murdered an elderly victim in Lyman. The attacker then stole her vehicle, and traveled to a hiking trailhead in Wayne County, where he murdered two women on the trail. This prompted a state-wide manhunt, which located the suspect after he had fled the scene, with the assailant eventually being located and arrested. As the suspect was arrested over the border in the state of Colorado, he has been identified as Ivan Miller. Analyst Comment: At the moment, this appears to be a series of random murders, as none of the victims (nor the perpetrator) appears to have any connection to any sort of motive, other than random mental illness. More details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: European evacuations of European citizens from the Middle East continues, with Spain dedicating military assets to getting some of their citizens out of the region over night. So far, zero Americans have been evacuated via American military means (which have the capabilities to fly when civilian aircraft cannot), and any American who has managed to get out has done so via commercial means. Commercial flights out of Dubai and Riyadh are occurring, they're just slow due to the sheer number of people trying to leave and the few aircraft landing between drone attacks. As of this afternoon, D+6 (six days after this war began) the drone attacks have remained constant. All Gulf States have been publishing daily engagement numbers, and so far, the drone attacks have not really dwindled that much, despite assurances by many that the attacks have stopped. The drone attacks have not ceased...they are simply being intercepted out over the water. Some drones are making it through defenses to strike targets, with limited success. This afternoon several hotels were struck by Iranian drones in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which has served to remind everyone involved that the threats are real and persistent. Either way, drone sightings and close-in interceptions are enough to ground aircraft for a while, further adding to the evacuation bottlenecks that are stacking up around the region. Regarding timelines, yesterday evening the estimates for the length of the operation have changed again, with SECWAR Hegseth stating that the operation is now planned to take an uncertain amount of time, potentially up to 8 weeks. The Secretary of War also stated that the United States is planned to achieve uncontested airspace in the skies over Iran within a few days, possibly up to a week. Either way, this confirms that after nearly a week, the airspace is still somewhat contested, despite the overwhelming large bombing raids witnessed so far. Analyst: S2A1 Research: Disclaimer: No LLMs were used in the writing of this report. //END REPORT//

Vayne takes you on a hunt. you don't know why. she doesn't take anyone. she says stay behind me. don't speak unless i speak first. don't make a sound when we move. you say yes. she looks at you for a second longer than usual. "if i tell you to run, you run. you don't look back for me. are we clear" you say yes. she doesn't answer. she just turns and walks out the door. you follow her through the city streets. she moves different when she's working. shoulders lower. steps shorter. her head doesn't turn but her eyes do. you can feel her cataloguing everything. the man smoking outside the tavern. the cat under the cart. the second floor window with the curtain half drawn. she leads you through an alley you didn't know existed. stops at a brick wall. then she climbs. there are handholds carved into the mortar that you wouldn't have noticed if she hadn't used them first. she's halfway up before she realizes you're still at the bottom. she looks down at you. "up" you climb. your hands are shaking by the time you reach the top. the roof is flat. old clay tiles along the edges. a low wall you can crouch behind. the city stretches out below you in every direction. a thousand windows glowing gold in the dusk. she's already at the far side. crouched. crossbow unslung. watching a building across the square. she doesn't look at you when you come up beside her. "stay low" you crouch. "that building. third floor. second window from the left" you look. "i see it" he'll come to that window sometime tonight. i've watched him do it for three nights. i want to know who he meets you ask who he is. her jaw tightens. "a demon pretending to be a man" you don't ask what that means. you settle in beside her. the wind is up here. it pulls at her hair and she doesn't bother fixing it. the sun is going down behind her. her profile in the gold light looks like something carved. her hands on the crossbow are steady. completely still. you've never seen anyone be this still. an hour passes. she doesn't move. you try not to move. your leg falls asleep. you shift an inch. she looks at you. you go completely still again. she looks back at the window. another hour. the sun is gone. the city is blue and black. lamps are lighting up one by one. the air is getting cold. you're shivering before you realize you're shivering. she notices. she doesn't say anything. then she takes off her cloak. doesn't look at you. holds it out to the side. "take it" you say "you'll be cold" "i don't get cold. take it" you take it. it's warm from her. it smells like leather and steel and something underneath. pine. smoke. something you can't name. you put it around your shoulders. the hem pools on the tile. it's huge on you. it's not huge on her. you hadn't realized how tall she is until you were wearing her cloak. she doesn't look at you for the next ten minutes. the stars come out. she shifts closer to you. just a little. so her shoulder is almost touching yours. you don't say anything about it. she doesn't either. you can feel the heat coming off her even through the cloak. another hour. still nothing at the window. she says "tell me something" you blink. "what" "anything. i need to stay sharp. talking keeps me sharp. not about the target. something else" you didn't expect that. you tell her about a book you've been reading. she listens. actually listens. her eyes never leave the window but you can tell she's hearing every word. she asks one question. you answer. she goes quiet again. you keep talking. quieter now. she interrupts you. "shh" she's not looking at the window anymore. she's looking at the roof two buildings over. you don't see anything. you don't see anything for a long time. then you do. a shadow that moves the wrong way. her hand finds yours. she doesn't look at you when she does it. her eyes don't leave the shadow. her fingers lace through yours and LOCK. tight. too tight. knuckles going white around your hand. "don't move" she breathes. you don't move. you can feel every ounce of her focus through her grip. it's not a lover's hold. it's a predator's. every muscle in her hand coiled. ready to drop yours the instant she needs the crossbow. she's not holding you for you. she's holding you to keep track of where you are without having to look. it should scare you. it doesn't. there is something about being held that tight by someone that dangerous that makes the rest of the world go quiet. your heartbeat slows. your breathing slows. the cold stops mattering. you are not the one hunting but you are with the one who is. and nothing is going to get through her to reach you. the shadow crosses the roof and disappears into a stairwell. she watches the spot it left for another full minute. her hand is still locked around yours. she doesn't loosen it. you don't want her to. finally she lets out a breath you didn't know she was holding. "not him. but someone who works for him" her grip eases. slowly. finger by finger. like she's having to consciously tell each one to let go. the last one is her thumb. it stays against your palm for half a second longer than the rest. then she takes her hand back. the cold rushes in where she was. she glances at you. just for a second. then she looks back at the window. the rest of the night she's quieter than before. the target never shows. when the sky starts turning grey she stands up. stretches. rolls her shoulders. looks out over the city one last time. "we're done" you stand too. your legs don't work right. she catches your elbow without looking. "careful" she keeps her hand there until you're steady. then she takes it away. you start to hand her cloak back. she says "keep it for the climb down" she goes first. you follow. the handholds are easier going down once you know where they are. when you're both on the ground she turns to take the cloak. you hand it to her. her fingers brush yours. she doesn't pull back as fast as she usually does. she puts the cloak back on. it's warm now. from you. she has to notice. she doesn't say anything about it. she walks you home. at your door she stops. "don't tell anyone what you saw tonight" you say "i didn't see much" she looks at you. her eyes in the lamplight. the edge of her mouth. almost softer than it should be. "you saw enough" then she turns and walks back into the dark. you close the door. your hand still feels cold where hers was. you can still smell pine on your shirt. you don't sleep. Learned something about Bees Today. A male bee mates for less than 5 seconds in midair. The ejaculation is so explosive you can hear it pop from a few feet away. His body rips in half. He falls dead before hitting the ground. And he is one of the lucky males in the hive. When a male bee, called a drone, chases down a queen mid-flight at speeds of 22 miles per hour, his entire reproductive organ turns inside out. The pressure required for this comes from nearly all the blood in his body, which rushes downward to force the organ outward like a spring. The semen fires into the queen with so much force it makes the audible pop. The organ then snaps off and stays lodged inside her like a cork. As he flips backward off her body, his abdomen rips open. The next drone waiting his turn has to physically yank out the dead male's cork before he can mate. The same thing then happens to him. The queen does this 12 to 20 times in a single afternoon. She flies up to a spot in the sky that beekeepers call a drone congregation area. Picture an invisible meeting point about 50 to 130 feet above the ground where up to 11,000 male bees from as many as 240 different hives are hovering, waiting for her. These spots stay in the exact same locations year after year, sometimes for over a decade. No one fully understands how brand new drones, born only weeks earlier, find them. By the end of her mating run, the queen has collected around 100 million sperm cells. She keeps only 5 to 6 million in a tiny internal storage organ that keeps them alive for years. From that supply, she uses just two sperm cells per egg for the rest of her life, laying up to 2,000 eggs a day for 2 to 7 years. After that one afternoon in the sky, she will never mate again. A 2019 study from UC Riverside, the University of Copenhagen, and the University of Western Australia found that bee semen contains toxic proteins that temporarily blind the queen by interfering with how vision genes function in her brain. If she can't see well, she can't fly out again to mate with more males. Their semen also carries a separate protein that attacks and kills sperm cells from rival drones still inside her. The males keep competing long after every one of them is dead. The 99.9% of drones who never get to mate have it worse. As autumn arrives, the female worker bees in the hive stop feeding their brothers, then drag them out of the entrance after biting off their wings. The drones can't fly back in. They starve or freeze in the grass within days. The colony raises a fresh batch of disposable males the next spring, and the whole cycle starts over.
