Our airlines are pretty much skyward cattle cars regardless of class. Hell, first class in the U.S. is premium economy pretty much anywhere in Asia. Buyer beware.

American Airlines is garbage. My wife and I went to Hawaii to catch a cruise for our honeymoon. There was logistics issues that were the airports fault and we got to the ticketing counter 45 minutes before takeoff. We could have easily made the flight but they refused to load the baggage due to their rules. We wouldn’t have made it to our cruise taking the next flight nor did they help with helping us get another flight. It would have been day 3 of the cruise once we got there and then would have had to fly to Kauai to catch up to it. Needless to say, as someone who used to fly 150,000 miles a year I basically destroyed my AA credit card at the counter and told them me and any of my business partners doing work with me will refuse to fly AA. So far out of the $100,000 I’ve spent on airfare yearly has gone to Delta or Alaska. I’d rather walk than fly @AmericanAir Ended up taking an Alaska Airlines flight next day and caught up with the cruise on Maui. Missing just the first day of the cruise. Nearly 7 years later their refusal to help has cost them at least $1 million with my business going anywhere but there.

You should be more worried about the flight making it to the destination

US carriers don’t really have first class long haul like European, Asian, middle eastern carriers do. They only have business class - which is a smaller cabin / lower density than economy and also lay flat seats. And mostly 1-2-1 seating which means everyone has direct isle access. $5k per person round trip is pretty common any airline for business class full fare, short notice no discount. It can be as cheap as a couple grand on sale or even close to free with points. Quality can vary greatly between airlines and even on the same airline / same route. Depends how busy they are, which crew you get, how many problems they’re having. Luck of the draw for a guaranteed lie flat seat. Take pictures, document, file a complaint. You will almost always get some sort of compensation. Real long haul First class on an international carrier (not US) can easily be $20k per person full fare round trip. But also can be far less on discount.
