Emperor penguins are threatened by shrinking sea ice in Antarctica, according to the British Antarctic Survey. The scientists observed the birds’ molting sites and found that when the ice breaks out from under the penguins when they are without their waterproof feathers, they can become hypothermic in the water. “This is totally new to us,” Peter Fretwell, lead author of the British Antarctic Survey, said on Feb. 24. “We could never see the emperor penguin molting sites before and it's only because the sea ice has contracted that we can, we can actually monitor them over this time period.”

In 2000, more than 12,000 strangers flew to South Africa to wash penguins by hand. A cargo ship called the MV Treasure had gone down off the coast near Cape Town, and the oil that spilled from it was drifting straight toward two islands where most of the world’s African penguins lived. Around 40,000 birds were covered in it. The wildlife teams on the ground couldn’t possibly clean that many in time, so they put out a call for help, and people came. Volunteers flew in from across the world, took shifts in converted warehouses, and scrubbed the birds one by one with dish soap. They tube-fed them fish. They cleaned the pens. They slept in shifts and went back to it. Around 90 percent of the oiled penguins were cleaned, rehabilitated, and released back into the sea. Conservationists today still point to that operation as the reason African penguins are still around at all. It remains the largest animal rescue ever pulled off, and the entire thing ran on people who had no professional training and no reason to be there other than that they’d heard the birds needed hands.

I spoke with NABU Director Semen Kryvonos, SAPO Prosecutor Oleksandr Klymenko, Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, and Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Maliuk. We discussed various challenges. The anti-corruption infrastructure will work. Only without Russian influence, it needs to be cleared of that. And there should be more justice. Of course, NABU and SAPO will work. And it is important that the Prosecutor General is determined to ensure that in Ukraine the inevitability of punishment for those who go against the law is actually ensured. This is what Ukraine really needs. The cases that have been lying dormant must be investigated. For years, officials who have fled Ukraine have been casually living abroad for some reason – in very nice countries and without legal consequences – and this is not normal. There is no rational explanation for why criminal proceedings worth billions have been “hanging” for years. And there is no explanation why the Russians can still get the information they need. Important is – without Russians. Important is to have an inevitability of punishment and that society really sees it.
