"Everybody thought we were just burning a billion dollars." "It turns out some of these things when they work, they are celebrated and when they don't work, nobody knows about it." "The thing that we were obsessed about and Bill, in particular, was obsessed about was natural language." "When the OpenAI team started pivoting from what, at that time, they were doing a lot more RL and what have you, interestingly enough, they switched to natural language and scaling laws. And that's when we sort of picked it up." What triggered the billion dollars was a research team changing what it worked on.
