L-Theanine was shown to COMPLETELY prevent the rise in cortisol in response to a stressful event. This trial leveraged L-Theanine's anti-glutamate properties, which controls activation of the sympathetic nervous system and HPA axis. People taking theanine also showed higher alpha waves in the brain and trends towards improved cognitive function.

The combination of coffee and L-theanine is a proven way to enhance alertness while reducing the "jitteriness" some people get from high doses of caffeine. Multiple studies show that together they can boost focus, attention, and reduce distractibility during cognitively demanding tasks. Some people refer to the feeling as a "calm yet focused" state. The combination works because L-theanine alters the pharmacological profile of coffee—balancing caffeine-induced stimulation by increasing the activity of alpha brain waves and calming neurotransmitters like GABA and serotonin. For the best results, pair 100–200 mg of L-theanine with 100–150 mg of caffeine;. Take them at the same time due to their similar absorption kinetics. Importantly L-theanine doesn't influence the metabolism (half-life) of caffeine—you still need to be cautious about not drinking coffee too close to bedtime.

L-theanine may amplify the cognitive benefits of coffee without as much of the jitteriness or anxiety. The combination can improve sustained attention, reaction time, and accuracy on demanding cognitive tasks, while reducing feelings of anxiety or jitteriness compared with caffeine alone. Caffeine boosts alertness and focus, but for some people that comes with overstimulation. L-theanine works synergistically with caffeine to smooth out that response and keep the cognitive upside. A practical dose is about 100-150 mg caffeine (roughly one cup of coffee) with 100-200 mg L-theanine. Take them at the same time. You’re essentially keeping the focus, but taking some of the edge off.
