On April 1, 2001 a US Navy EP-3 electronic reconnaissance aircraft entered China’s coastal airspace near Hainan. Hero and Martyr Wang Wei, squadron leader of the Second Flight Brigade of PLAN Aviation, and his wingman Zhao Yu each took a J-8II up to intercept and track it. During the close intercept the American aircraft broke flight rules and turned sharply. Wang Wei’s fighter was struck and damaged. He reported the controls failing and tried to save the jet. Zhao Yu ordered him to eject and called: “81192, please return to base immediately.” Wang Wei answered; received, I can no longer return. You continue ahead. Repeat, you continue ahead. The J-8II went into the South China Sea. Hero and martyr Wang Wei was 33. Since that day the call has not stopped. 81192 is the aircraft number, the memorial, and the line passed to every pilot who flies the same coast; defend the airspace, keep going, build your own aircraft so the next intercept is not flown in someone else’s shadow.
