The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a flap on a Boeing 737’s wing partially broke off before landing in Texas on Tuesday. Delta Air Lines Flight 1893 was flying from Orlando International to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport when passengers noticed something had partially broken away from the back of the wing. The airline said in a statement, "After landing it was observed that a portion of the left wing’s flap was not in place. The aircraft has been taken out of service for maintenance. B-17F Flying Fortress 42-30867 drifts out of formation pursued by a Luftwaffe fighter while the crew bails out on October 9th 1943 This segment of Luftwaffe gun camera footage is unique in that it is possibly the only surviving clip where the aircraft under attack is identifiable by its squadron codes. In the last frames the code N-TU is visible suggesting this was 351st Bomb Group 510th Bomb Squadron Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress 42-30867. The 351st Bomb Group's mission narrative indicates that this was the aircraft's second combat mission having been delivered to the 510th two weeks earlier, and it was one of five of the group's aircraft to be lost that day: Mission No. 47 – October 9, 1943 The Group was briefed to attack the Arado Aircraft Factory at Anklam, Germany. The crews were very concerned when confronted by the mission details. It was the longest flight to date, with expected moderate to heavy flak concentrations. After the briefing, Sgt. Pete Zibas, the engineer on Lt. Garcia’s aircraft, recalls the gunners clamoring for an additional four cans of ammunition per gun. Twenty-one planes were led by Colonel Burns, Captain Carraway, and Lt. Norris with Lt. Stackhouse navigating and Lt. Winter as bombardier. The formation crossed the North Sea at 4,000 feet and prior to climbing to bombing altitude, the fuel was cross-fed into the main tanks and the bomb bay tanks jettisoned. It was such an honor to help design this “Snap” coin that flew alongside four crew coins on the Polaris Dawn mission and an even greater honor to see it fly to space. Thank you to our artist friend Erin Bonilla for beautifully turning this idea into reality. I was so blown away when the crew graciously offered this opportunity - thank you - I can’t wait to put the flown coin on display and will cherish it forever. Some insight on the design: The seven stars represent the seven astronauts I have been lucky to befriend from Inspiration4 to Polaris Dawn: Jared, Sian, Hayley, Chris, Kidd, Sarah, and Anna. My silhouette is seen capturing a Falcon 9 rising in front of sunrise, based off one of my all-time favorite photos, but with the fairing swapped out for a Dragon. Other elements include palm trees and birds representing my appreciation for the local Florida nature around the Cape. In the video you can see the flown coin floating in space. Earlier in the mission it reached new heights in Earth orbit during a crewed mission and then was exposed to the vacuum of space during the mission’s spacewalk. The still image is another unit, not flown, captured a few months ago when I saw the coin in-person for the first time. I have kept it on my person for much of the last few months as a good luck token and reminder of the exciting space program whose stories I am lucky to help share. I had it with me all throughout launch day and on the VAB roof during liftoff, knowing that a copy - and a small part of me - was joining the crew in space. Many were made, and one each for the four crew and myself flew - but each coin has a small magnetic insert that pops out. Hundreds of those smaller inserts flew, and we will be able to pop in those small flown parts into the non-flown coins, such that hundreds of coins will have a part that flew.
