Today, we celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States Army. For two and a half centuries, the Army has defended our nation, responded in times of crisis, and upheld the cause of freedom. Its legacy is defined not only by battlefield victories, but by the strength, discipline, and courage of the men and women who have proudly worn the uniform. One of them was my father, Donald Collins, who served as an infantry sergeant in World War II. He was wounded twice and earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his service during the Battle of the Bulge. I recently traveled with a bipartisan Senate delegation to Belgium and Luxembourg to honor those who fought in that pivotal campaign 80 years ago, and to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifices made by our Greatest Generation. From the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and all other conflicts where the U.S. Army has been called upon, soldiers have stood ready to serve, and the people of our nation are forever grateful.

Medal of Honor Monday 🇺🇸 Roy Benavidez was a Green Beret who volunteered to fly into a brutal firefight in Vietnam after hearing that a Special Forces team was trapped and surrounded. Already badly wounded, he fought his way through enemy fire, carried wounded men to helicopters, recovered classified documents, and kept going even after being shot, stabbed, and hit by grenade fragments. He refused to stop until his brothers were out. Roy Benavidez passed away on November 29, 1998, but his courage and name will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸🙏
