Really funny situation happened to us today in Xinjiang. The way it started was not so funny: when we rented our RV we gave our 3 empty luggage to the RV rental company for safekeeping, as they'd have taken way too much room in the RV. However, in the 34 days we were traveling, they somehow managed to lose all three. Not to worry, the boss of the RV company personally called us to apologize and told us he'd buy us 3 new luggage. The day after we gave back the RV, he texted us to ask us where we were and told us he'd send a car to pick us up and go luggage shopping. A little while later, a large black Audi S8 shows up, I open the door in the back and there he was: barefoot, funny shorts, black tank top, glass of Romanée-Conti in hand. The boss had personally come to buy the luggage with us 😅 He genuinely had a larger than life personality, in a way you can only see in China (watch the video for a small preview). He brought us to a market with many luggage shops. We went to the first shop: he told us to choose 3 luggage we liked while he was outside, walking barefoot in the street, drinking his wine, eating sausages on sticks that he'd asked his driver to fetch for him, and smoking cigarette after cigarette, sometimes all at the same time. After we'd chosen 3 luggage we liked, he makes his entrance to discuss price. And he starts bargaining, really hard but in such a hilarious way no-one in the shop could help laughing, going into tirades on how he was a Xinjiang local, how these luggage were worth nothing, how they were trying to scam him - all delivered barefoot with a glass of red wine and a sausage on a stick, like a man who'd been bargaining in markets since birth and had simply decided at some point that shoes were optional. Anyhow he drove the price down to 1,200 RMB for 3 good quality luggage ($180, which is already pretty cheap) but he wasn't satisfied so off we went to a second shop. In the second shop, same process: we choose 3 luggage we like and tell the boss to come over for the price negotiation. And there again, he puts on the same show but, having witnessed the carnage next door, they were more... cooperative: 980 RMB for 3 luggage (which were actually bigger and better than in the 1st shop). Still not good enough. The man had arrived in a Audi S8 with a driver, drinking Romanée-Conti and was now going to war over the last 200 yuan. Off to a 3rd shop. When he arrived in the 3rd shop, the shop boss - who had followed everything that happened in the first 2 shops from a distance (half the market had) - was already laughing. Our man walked in, barefoot, wine in hand, and opened with: "you heard what happened with the 2 others, you'll give us a good price, won't you?" He still drove a very hard bargain, threatening to leave at least three times, so much so he got all the way down to 760 RMB - $110 - for our 3 luggage, which frankly speaking where the best yet, an amazingly low price. By that point I was so amused that I asked if I could film him: he agreed and delivered the tirade you see on the video, covering Confucius, the Communist Party, deflation, Romanée-Conti, and a sweep through every major world religion, all of which teach people to do good except - and he wanted this on the record - "that shameless Li Hongzhi from Falun Gong, that's the exception" 🤣 (he's right though!) At one point he holds up the luggage and declares to the camera: "the price doesn't matter, what matters is how it feels." This after two hours of bargaining across three shops 🤣 He also, hilariously, after the deal was already done at 760 RMB, casually tried to talk the price down to 690 - mid-monologue, without breaking stride 🤣 Anyhow, long story short, he really delivered for us: he covered the cost of all 3 luggage, they were better than the ones we'd lost, and he threw in something no amount of money can buy - a front-row seat to the greatest bargaining performance in Xinjiang!
