Michelangelo was born on this day in March 6, 1475. To this very day, no artist even comes close to touching him. Let's explore his life's work: 🧵

1. Madonna of the Stairs A sculpture from around 1491-1492 made approximately at the age of 17-18. It was done in the rilievo schiacciato (shallow relief) technique and influenced by Donatello.

2. The Battle of the Centaurs This is another sculpture from around 1491-1492. -demonstrating Michelangelo's skill in his late teens, approximately 17-18. It was inspired by classical mythology and was influenced by his mentor, Lorenzo de’ Medici.

3. Bacchus Sculpted around 1496-1497, it highlights Michelangelo's artistic prowess as he reached his early twenties. -this was done around the age of 21-22. The statue was originally commissioned by Cardinal Raffaele Riario but later rejected.

4. The Pieta This was completed between 1498-1499 It reveals his mastery in sculpture during his early twenties. -around the age of 23-24. Currently housed in St. Peter’s Basilica

5. David Sculpted between 1501-1504, it symbolizes Michelangelo's brilliance in his mid to late twenties. -he was around the age of 26-29. Originally meant for Florence Cathedral, it was placed in Piazza della Signoria instead.

6. The Bruges Madonna Created around 1501-1504, it is another masterpiece demonstrating his mastery during his mid to late twenties. -approximately at the age of 26-29. Housed in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges, Belgium.

7. Doni Tondo Painted around 1503-1504 at the age of 28-29 -reveals Michelangelo's talent in painting during his late twenties and foreshadowing the Sistine Chapel. It is Michelangelo’s only surviving panel painting.

8. Tondo Pitti -sculpted around 1503, it was also made approximately at the age of 28-29. It is named after the Pitti family, who later owned it. It is currently displayed in Florence’s Bargello Museum.

10. The Tomb of Pope Julius II Sculpted around 1513-1515 approximately at the age of 38-40. Due to constant delays, Michelangelo called it the "Tragedy of the Tomb."

11. Michelangelo's Laurentian Library Designed between 1524-1534 It reflects his architectural brilliance during his late forties to late fifties, approximately at the age of 49-59. It was originally meant to hold the Medici book collection.

12. The Last Judgment Was completed between 1536-1541, and wasn't ventured upon until he was in his sixties,. -approximately at the age of 61-66. Some figures were later censored due to nudity, with draperies painted over them.

13. St. Peter's Basilica Michelangelo was tasked with the superintendence of the building of St. Peter's Basilica in 1547 and would go on to design the dome. He was around the age of 72. Michelangelo became chief architect in 1546, taking over from Antonio da Sangallo.

14. Rondanini Pieta It was worked upon up until his death in 1564. Michelangelo passed away at the age of 88 on February 18, 1564. It is currently housed in the Sforza Castle in Milan.
