We’ve now learned that more than $6 BILLION on California’s High-Speed Rail has been paid out in so-called “change order delays.” The most recent settlement alone topped half a billion dollars. Let that sink in. Roughly one-third of all dollars spent so far has gone to build NOTHING — just paying contractors to wait. That’s $6 billion in waiting fees while Californians struggle with the cost of living. And instead of fixing the broken system, the Governor has proposed allocating $1 billion per year for the next 20 years — with no meaningful construction reforms. It gets worse. A new bill this year would add secrecy provisions around High-Speed Rail, limiting the public’s ability to see where the money is going. At the very moment we need more transparency in Sacramento, some legislators are trying to hide the ball. That is unacceptable. Californians deserve accountability. They deserve transparency. And they deserve leaders who treat their tax dollars with respect. I can think of $6 billion worth of priorities that would actually help our communities. Because right now, the only thing truly moving at high speed… is the cost of this project to taxpayers.

Minister Bowen has boasted about this huge taxpayer commitment, but when I asked for a breakdown of what has been spent so far, what will be spent each year, and what remains in different funds, the Department couldn’t give me a straight answer. They confirmed almost half a billion dollars is going out the door this year alone, but beyond that it was “take it on notice”.
